Diboll home-rule city charter approved

Diboll voters approved a charter for the city by an overwhelming margin Saturday, meaning Diboll will become a home-rule city with greater powers and more capacity for self-governance. The vote on the charter was 254-150, a margin that surprised Mayor Bill Brown, who had expressed himself "cautiously optimistic" about the charter before the vote totals were released.

Diboll ISD Board of Trustees gets Havard at polls

Kent Havard will join returning incumbents Trey Wilkerson and Chuck Mann on the Diboll schools board of trustees after Saturday's election. Havard, Diboll's police chief, was the high vote-getter in the election, drawing 387 votes. Mann recorded 294 and Wilkerson 269.

Split vote fills sixth position on council

Incumbent Don Hendrick was the top vote-getter in Saturday's municipal election, while fellow incumbent Gandy Stubblefield failed to win a new term in a city election that saw a strong turnout. Hendrick received 213 votes to lead a field of six candidates for three two-year terms on the council.

With new administrators and a facility upgrade, Trinity Mission of Diboll is more than ever dedicated to serving the community. Administrator David Davidson joined Trinity April 1. Coming here from the Waco area, he has been in the health care industry for eight years. He's making his home in Diboll. Director of Nursing Alice Vineyard has been here since February.

The Boys & Girls Club of Diboll invites the public to the annual Steak and Burger Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the club building. Dinner guests will experience a fabulous meal provided by Bodacious BBQ and be able to bid on silent auction items.

Yard Beautiful homes selected

The home of Jimmy Mettlen, 510 Arrington, has been selected by the Diboll Garden Club as the first-place winner for the Northeast area of Diboll in the May 8-9 judging. In second place was the home of Rick Hill, 1103 Redbud, and third place was awarded to the home of Paul Geye, 603 Arrington.

Diboll First Assembly of God

The youth of Diboll's First Assembly of God sold chances on a number of items as a fund-raising effort to send the youth to Kids' Camp. Given away were a $150 Mothers Day basket; $100 Wal-Mart card; $100 Academy card; $50 Olive Garden card; and a $50 Lowe's card. The drawing was May 4.

Joe Henry Smith came in for sugar beet seeds after getting his garden tractor in running condition. All the tractor needed was a filter, Joe Henry said, "You'd think they could make a filter that would last for more than 20 years!" After all that, we didn't have any sugar beets. John Scott came in to buy a new Stihl trimmer; his old one only lasted for 12 years.

DFEC graduate moves one step closer to her goal

Diboll Family Education Center, 100 Hines, offers GED preparation classes and ESL classes. The classes are free and with open enrollment students may begin at any time. Class schedule is Monday through Thursday 8-noon and Friday 8-11 a.m. The center also offers their students free child care for children from birth to school age.

Surveillance cameras stolen from Diboll Primary School

Someone stole two outside surveillance cameras from Diboll Primary School the night of April 30. A ladder had to be used to reach the two cameras and the thieves used wire cutters to cut the cables. Pictured is a man's watch that was found in the area where one of the cameras was stolen, and may belong to one of the thieves. The watch's brand name is "Paul Jardin.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A college student whose friend was being questioned in a hit and run found himself charged with assaulting an officer with a curious choice of weapons: M&Ms. Sean McGuire was arrested early Sunday at a convenience store after Drake University security guards noticed the colored candies falling on the ground around the officer.

Edcouch abolishes segregation law 70 years after enactment

EDCOUCH (AP) - A South Texas town has abolished a segregation law seven decades after it was enacted. The Board of Aldermen unanimously voted Monday to abolish an ordinance that banned "Spanish or Mexican" residents who were not servants or maids from occupying "any building on the American side or portion" of Edcouch.

Second sect baby born in state custody

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A mother being held as a minor in state custody from a polygamist sect gave birth Monday to a baby boy immediately taken into child-protective custody as the state acknowledges the mother may be an adult. The boy is the second baby born in state custody since Texas child welfare officials raided the sect's ranch in West Texas April 3.

Ida Mae Allen, 81, of Allentown, was born June 1 5, 1 926, in Ellis County, Texas, the daughter of the late Ida Mae (Britt) and Jeff Walker. She passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in a local hospital. Mrs. Allen was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as a homemaker. Her pride was her family and her home.

For the Diboll Lumberjack Baseball squad it has been an exciting season on the baseball diamond. Notching an overall record of 19-8 with their first postseason appearance in over a decade, a Bi-District title and finally an appearance in Area finals to boot, this year was undeniably a success for the men in red and white.
