Diboll officers raising funds

Off-duty members of the Diboll Police Department, put their usual equipment on the shelf and picked up their fish frying apparatus Sunday morning to raise funds to benefit the youth of the community.

"This is the first time we've held a fish fry to raise money for much needed equipment for the Boy's and Girl's Club," said DPD Chief Kent Havard. "Several items are needed at the center and we just wanted to help."

The items Chief Havard is talking about are a deep freezer and an ice maker.

"Our first goal is the deep freezer and, if enough is raised, we'll get the ice maker too," said Havard of the department.

Havard explained that in an effort to see that children at the Club have at least one hot meal each day and to meet the needs of the growing number of recipients, ample space is needed to store and preserve food items to insure they do so.

In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.

Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow - all while having fun. They are truly The Positive Place For Kids.

Havard said, "Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, over 330 plates of fried fish and all the trimmings were served. Several businesses and individuals helped make this a successful event, and we can't thank them enough for their generosity.

Items or services provided were from the Diboll Brookshire Brothers, East Tex Printing, Around the World Salvage, East Texas Pawn, Dean's Meat Market, Sam's Club, Pct. 1 Constable Tom Selman, Rocky Thigpen of Angelina Hardwood and Randy DuPree of Haney Trucking.

The police department will also be taking donations for your chance to win a single-shot .243 CVA Optima Elite. A $1 donation gets you one ticket of $5 will get you six. Contact any Diboll Police Department member or go by the police department. The winner will be selected by a drawing on December 15 at the Boys & Girls Club at 201 S. 1st First Street in Diboll.
