Roy and Glenda Spradley and Glenda's mother, Elsie Tee Rudd of Center, recently returned from a nine-day trip to New Orleans, Gulf Shores, AL and on to Lake Park, GA, to see little three and a half month old Maggie Ann Mays, the daughter of John and Ashley Mays. Maggie Ann is the granddaughter of Jeff and Patti Spradley, the great granddaughter of Roy and Glenda, and the great-great granddaughter of Elsie Tee.
Their trip started with a stop in Baton Rouge, LA for some shopping and for the night before driving on to New Orleans airport to pick up son and daughter- in-law, Jeff and Patti Spradley who had their trip planned from there to Lake Park, GA. First, they went to the French Quarter where they had reservations for lunch at the Two Sisters Buffet. There they chose outdoor dining and ate under the canopied tables while the violinist entertained. Their sightseeing tours included the French Quarters, Superdome, the levees but the unreal devastation that still exists throughout the city. In neighborhood after neighborhood, the water marks as high as the second stories remained where the uninhabited homes with much damage were still standing. In more areas, the slabs for homes or slabs and pools were all that remained. They stopped at one location and walked across a home's slab to see the beautiful tile floors and the empty pool in the back yard. Later, they drove along the coast to Gulfport, AL, observing similar damage all the way. The weather was beautiful the next day when they arrived in Gulf Shores, AL, for the National Shrimp Festival. There, they enjoyed all kinds of seafood, the entertainment and shopping in spite of the large crowds. Following some stops for more sightseeing the next day they made their way to Lake Park, GA, where Ashley, John, Maggie Ann and friends were waiting with dinner prepared. Seeing Maggie's nursery room in John and Ashley's townhouse located across Lake Park from Jeff and Patti was a fun experience. Before the trip, each time Glenda called to inquire about Maggie, Jeff would say, “Mother, she is just perfect.” “Sure enough, she was,” agreed the great and great-great grandparents.
After returning to Lufkin, grandparents Roy and Glenda, Mollie Haney and great-grandmother, Elsie Tee, were in Kingwood to see Chuck and Lori Haney's seventh grader, Charlie Haney and his middle school basketball team beat another middle school team. The next day they all attended Grandparents' Day at fifth grader Zachary Haney's school where they enjoyed seeing his holiday program, his homeroom where he demonstrated his reading project, a lighted adult-sized robot, and his science projects.
During the holidays Chuck, Charlie and Zachary hunted on their deer lease in Nacogdoches County where Charlie, 13, killed a six-point buck with a .243 from a distance of 75 yards.

I saw Pam Davis in the Final Touch last week when I went to have Bettie Powell give me a hair cut. She asked about Tommy Hines. Charlotte Font Sullivan called checking on Bettie Powell while I was there. Shelly Hollis was able to wax my eye brows so I was beautiful for the LHS Alumni Association's Chili Bowl. It was well attended even in the rain and cold weather. People kept saying “it is chili weather” and indeed it was.
Talk about people with “secret lives”. I met Hellen Revelle, at Todd, Hamaker & Johnson's CPA office. She has two Jack Russell terriers, Rudy who is 7 and Lucy who is 4. Hellen is in the East Texas Working Dog Association and trains her dogs for the agility trial competition a couple of times a month. Sally Quick is the president of the association and has the equipment at her house for training dogs in obedience classes. Hellen has taken her dogs to Reliant Center for the dog show that is in July with between 300 and 400 dogs. She works them almost every day with equipment in her back yard even with flood lights installed by her husband Bill Revelle so she can work Rudy and Lucy on these dark afternoons with the time change when she comes home from work. Rachel Kennerly has a Rottweiler named Sherman who did the agility trials but has become a “couch potato” due to his age. I am going to have to find out more about Sally Quick and her equestrian rescue efforts.
Helen Boyd sent an email that on the first Friday, February 2, the SPJST Lodge #191 will be having a D.J. dance with admission $6 a couple. BYOB with setups available and everyone is welcome. The hardwood dance floor and very good smoke exhaust fans make it a night to go and “Let's Dance!” Call 632-2849 for more information.

Jerome Lair is the manager at Brookshire Brothers Fresh Market on Chestnut. He said he is in the process of changing things and to give him six months.
Edward Hicks came to Lufkin for the funeral of his friend Randy Schmidt.
On the Martin Luther King holiday, Ernest and I ate lunch at the Tokyo Seafood & Steak House. The chef put on a show with his knives and flames from the grill. The food was good and generous portions. Sitting at our hibachi grill were Karen McWilliams Vinson, three-year-old Dylan Vinson and her sister-in- law Robbie Vinson. Karen is the principal at Timber Creek Elementary School in Livingston and Robbie is a teacher there. Eric Pruitt and his buddies were across from us at the 9-person station where they cooked the food for us while we watched. Judy Perry and June Clement were chauffeurs for Flo Wood's guests at her 86th birthday party. Dubby Perry was taking their pictures. Those enjoying the Japanese food were: Hallie Allen, Maxine Jenkins, Margaret Anderson, and Clare Herrick. Others that were unable to attend with the group were Mary Lee Melton, Lola Will Taylor and Naomi Scott. All of these ladies have been friends for 60 years.
We planned a combined birthday party for Ernest, Julie Jumper-Morris and Billie Cardwell, but Billie got sick and missed the celebration. Ernest and Julie enjoyed fish and the trimmings with Ernie and Barbara Rowe, Mary Margaret and Michael Stevens, Rocky Morris, Tamesha Jumper, Patsy and Tommy Hines, Chuck Hines, Amy Murphy, Andrew Hines, Jean and Oscar Dillahunty, Chad Rowe, Mandy Humes, Justin Rowe, and Kimberly Ocker. It was a house full with the rain, but it did not dampen the spirits of the group. Julie will be 50 on January 28 and on a cruise with Rocky in the Caribbean so we celebrated early. We all just are thankful for each of our birthdays.
Catch you around town. Let me hear your news. Janice Ann email: roweja@suddenlink.net
