All Around Lufkin by Janice Ann Rowe

We missed the Swing and Sway KML's Way for their 2nd Annual Library Gala to benefit the collection. I had a report from Sally Alvis that it was a huge success with 200 in attendance.

The incredible 1940s theme featured a USO Show with Larry Greer and Shades of Blue playing classics from the era with Karen Greer as vocalist; one scene was the Pearl Harbor Patio Bar with decorations co-chair Nancy Wieden, along with decorators Lisa Hicks, Tamara Walters, Jetta Westerholm and Sue Parker made the library look like the 1940s. Hole in One's Bobby Marye was in the Officers Club where the live auction and food took place. Brent Slayton was the auctioneer for the evening. Co-Chair of the food was Karen Howell who also serves as the Library Board's Educational Programming Coordinator. Joan Duncan was also co-chair of the food and Brookshire Brothers assisted with funding and catering services. The Gala Chairs were Carlotta Hunt and Lynn Torres; Live Auction Chair - Catherine Roberts; Silent Auction Chair - Bonnie Borgfeld and Carlotta Hunt with help from Effie Stemple. It was a wonderful evening - big thank yous to Lisa Hicks and Basket and Bows II, Brookshire Brothers, Lufkin Coca Cola for their assistance. They don't have the dollar figures nailed down but can say the funds raised will enhance the collection (books, books on cd, and dvds). The Library Board is totally responsible for the "innards" of the library - everything you can read, touch, or check out as well as the computers, furniture. The City funds the employees and building use.

Linda and Ed Mount sold their home on Old Union Road and are "town people" now on Hawthorne at the end of Copeland and have a new telephone number too. I heard that Adron and Sally Mosley, Thomas Moore, Ray Carswell with Jill and Jon were scouting out the neighborhood where they moved.

Dorothy and Tom Owen moved before Christmas into the patio home that was Ward Burke's at PineCrest. Ward moved into the PineCrest main building. When I was at the Owen's house, I met Emily and Allison East. Their mother Jean East had adapted the drapes from the Owen's other house to some of the windows at the new 1900 square foot house. It is really cozy. Ward Burke is settled and busy as he can be.

The Diboll Project Graduation is having a fundraiser. The Enchanted Evening Steak Dinner will be February 10 at 7 p.m. at J R's Barn in Diboll. Dinner and entertainment is $30 per couple. The Angelina County Go-Texan Committee has some Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo tickets for $16 each. Tickets are going fast for the 31 st Annual Charity Ball sponsored by the Junior League of Lufkin. The Disco Ball will be February 10 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center. Rotel & the Hot Tomatoes (sponsored by Peltier Chevrotlet Cadillac, Inc) is the band. For more information contact Stacey Widner at 875-6005 or 637-8026 for ticket information.

Joy Fredrick and I had lunch at The Lunch Box and saw David and Martha Miles enjoying the new buffet that they have. Ginna and Ernest Hudgens and Jenny Spore were some that I knew at lunch.

I telephoned the City Hall and Renee Thompson returned my call about the American flags flying again at full staff. She said it was Friday, January 26. I also called Andy Adams at the Lufkin Daily News and he confirmed the date. So....all flags need to be flying full staff again.

Mary Jane West and Sally Ann Swearingen had an estate sale over the week end. Rebecca West was their cashier.

Mark your calendar for the Junior League Spring Time & Fabulous Finds to be April 19 to 21 at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center. This is their third year and sponsorships are available. You can contact Susan Harris or Kim Kassaw for more information. They will again have their preview party and luncheon tickets available.

John Kennedy entered the Texas Parks and Wild Life fundraiser and bought 10 tickets on the Big Time Texas Hunts, which included a pheasant, quail, turkey and dove hunt. John, his son Jack Kennedy and his friends Cane Yeary and Austin Thigpen enjoyed the pheasant hunt near Perryton. Enjoying the quail hunt were John and Jack Kennedy, Robert Telford and Chris Moss to Fort Hancock, south east of El Paso on the MacGuire Ranch, which is only 196,000 acres. They flew to El Paso and drove to the ranch. This was the weekend of the bad weather here and it snowed at the ranch. They hunted for their first time in snow and were able to bring home quail. The turkey hunt is for two and will be in April. The dove hunt is for four and booked for September. I told him to report back to me on these last two. There is a form that you can order these hunts when you buy a combo-hunting license. He told me the different types of hunts that are offered in the raffle. This was his fourth year to try and he put all of his chances on the bird hunt.

In my roaming, I went into the First Street Arts Center downtown. I met Mary Barry who has her art displayed in the show. Some other artists that I recognized their work were: Floyd Marsellos, Amos Lewis, Jeanelle McCall, Bryon Jones, Lynn Courtney, Sarah Wallace, Darcey Faircloth and others Jeff Brewer, Charlie Becker, Emily Sloan, Kristi Rader, Russ Howard, and Dennis Ford. Drop by and view what they have on display and all are for sale. You can contact them at 639-3250 for their hours of operation. Mary Barry was married to Ernest Rowe and we shared some "Ernest Rowe stories".

Carolyn Hyman was in town and we went to The Manhattan Restaurant for lunch. Some there were a big group from LISD, and Joie Henderson with Lawana Ray and Lois Finley. Destin Sabani greeted us. Carolyn visited with Shirley Reynolds, B.W. and Maurine Massingill, Jenny Caton and Ladeen Pluss while she was in Lufkin.

Lawana Ray and her mother Lois Finley were with Joie Henderson who left some quilts for the upcoming exhibit at the Museum of East Texas. We will have to get the dates.

Jimmy Tinkle was honored with the Texas Educational Theatre Association's Founder's Emeritus Award. This is quite an honor with the membership of some 3000 in the group. He received one of two given this year. Membership is made up of teachers from elementary, junior high, high school, colleges and universities. Jody baby-sat in Tyler with grandchildren, Jeremy, Brady and Cody, so Jay and Mindy could go to Shreveport for the weekend to celebrate Jay's big birthday. The kids love to drive the tractor around the Tinkle's property so they have no problem entertaining them.

Happy Birthday: Adam Carter, Davella Fudge, Dot Brookshire, Elsie McLain, Dana Jumper, Carrie Camp, Jimmy Cassels, Sarah Austin, Charles Young, Lynell Stover, Lauren Spurgeon, Lindsay Gillen, Pat Slaughter, Susanne Lively, Gwen Cunningham, Mary Clark, Madison Bartlett, Tommy Deaton, Jim Harkness, Charles Spurill, Bill Simpson, and Carolanne Teutsch.

Esther Loden will celebrate her 90th birthday on Saturday, February 3 at the Keltys Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Her daughter Christine Davis is hosting the birthday party.

Happy Anniversary: Carolyn and John Haney celebrate their 50 th anniversary on February 1; others celebrating are: Will and Carol Zbranek, Dubby and Judy Perry.

The Panther flag for the 1943 State Finalist team is flying at half-staff at the Lufkin High School in memory of Carl Peppard a member of the 1943 team.

Jill and Jon Carswell were in town with Emma and Abby. Abby celebrated her birthday on January 20 in The Woodlands with Martha and Ray Carswell and her uncle Jim Carswell. Jill and Jon were in Lufkin this past weekend and had Abby's first hair cut by Hope Alaniz at All About You Hair Salon on Timberland Drive. I heard that not only Abby got a hair cut but so did Emma, Jill and Ray Carswell. Hope was a busy lady.

Congratulations to Sallye Darmstadter and Stubblefield Learning Center for their efforts in the past 10 years to help graduates in our community. Sallye deserves the Golden Anvil Award at the Chamber of Commerce Banquet. It is "about time" that Arthur Temple was recognized for his efforts in the community by receiving the Angelina Award posthumously. We never could say enough thank yous to Mr. Temple and the T.L.L. Temple Foundation for their millions that have been given to Angelina County. Thanks to the Temple family for all that they have done for East Texas.

Let me hear your news. Catch you around town. Janice Ann email: roweja@suddenlink.net
