Hazel Marie Weems Mathis, 89, of Lufkin, was born September 1, 1917, to the late Lillie (Foster) and W. S. Weems. She passed away Saturday, February 24, 2007, at Pinecrest Retirement Center.
Memorial services for Mrs. Mathis were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 26, 2007, in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Charles Wisdom and Reverend Randy Brown officiating.
Hazel had lived in Lufkin most of her life. She volunteered for many years at Memorial Medical Center. As long as she was able, she visited all over Pinecrest to greet new neighbors and to check on those who were ill. Hazel loved people and enjoyed helping when she could. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 53 years. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Peyton and Barbara Mathis; son, Mike Mathis; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Steve Roper, and Martha and Ken Mears; grandsons, Jim Roper, Kirk Mathis and Todd Mathis; granddaughters, Jana Roper and Perilyn Mears; great grandsons, Jameson N. Hilliard, Lee Peyton Hilliard, Kyle Roper, Peyton Mathis, K. P. Mathis and Presley Mathis. Preceding Mrs. Mathis in death were her husband of 69 years, K.P. (Red) Mathis; her daughter-in-law, Susan R. Mathis; her granddaughter, Lauralyn Mathis Hilliard; and five brothers and two sisters. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jim Roper, Kirk Mathis, Todd Mathis; great grandsons, Jameson Hilliard, Lee P. Hilliard; and lifelong friend. J. E. Driskell.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Mrs. Mathis' memory may be made to the Lauralyn Mathis Hilliard Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Lufkin High School Alumni Association, P.O.
