Beverly and Pat Slaughter returned from a cruise on the Grand Princess from Galveston to the Western Caribbean. They met Dr. Mike and Pat Sabo on the third night at dinner and had no clue that they were on the ship. I talked to Pat Sabo and found out that on the second night of the cruise they were seated at a table of eight and the last couple to arrive was from Vancouver, Canada. She was 24 and he was 26. For the meal she ordered beef wellington and became choked on the beef. She looked at Pat with frightening eyes and her hands waving that she could not breathe. Mike immediately got her up and did the Heimlich maneuver on her eight to 10 times before they were able to clear her air pathway. The meat never came out, but it was passed when he had her bend over for one more thrust. The next morning flowers arrived at the Sabo's cabin from Michelle and Justin DeBodesta. They work at a hospital, she as a social worker and he in human recourses, and did not know how to administer the Heimlich maneuver. The positive side to this story is they were going home and promote people learning to use this maneuver. This was Mike's first time to save a life. He has asked some of his colleagues and none have used this method to save anyone. During the last part of the cruise to Costa Maya, Roatan, Belize, and Cozumel, they never saw the couple again. This is a memory that will be with the Sabos for the rest of their lives. Thanks Mike and Pat for being at the right place at the right time and knowing what to do.
Barb Flournoy sent an update on Jordan Flournoy and his Witherspoon Fellows at the Family Research Council in Washington D. C. Adrienne Morehead is one of the “fellows”, and she is kind enough to occasionally send updates/pictures and just let them know that Jordan is still alive. He says he is the only one who is up to date on all of his reading and research papers...so WHO has time to write, right? The Fellowship schedule is extraordinarily intense. The Fellows write a total of 24 footnoted research papers during the 14-week stint. In addition, each has a job at the Family Research Council and one day of the week is devoted exclusively to lectures and oral presentation of their papers. Each week a different group (by apartment...those who live together) of Fellows cooks for the rest of them...there are 9 total, 4 guys and 5 girls, in three apartments in an old house right behind the Library of Congress. Jordan's job at the Family Research Council is in the communications department. He researches and writes blogs for the Family Research Council website, writes radio show scripts for their Washington Watch show, and one day he went all around D.C. filming with Tony Perkins, head of the FRC.

Some that we saw were: Elbert Davis, Garion and Lindsey Taylor, Charles Murphy, Gandy Stubblefield, Ricky Gay, John and Penny Tatum, Sid Medford, Sandra and Ernest Hough, Tammy Citty, Tyler Greening, Kathy and Cary Deal, Sandy Bate, Jeff Horn, W. Most of these were there to watch their sons play against Nacogdoches. Coach Bill Berry is working with the team and they should have a good season. Their next home game is Friday, March 23.
I visited with Bob Poland and found out that he and Lola Will Taylor were in the second grade together at Manning and now 80 years later they are together at PineCrest.
Bob and Charles Poland went to Katy for the Eagle Scout Ceremony of grandson Robert Prendergast, son of Joy and Don Prendergast. Congratulations Robert.
J. E. Driskell was surprised by his sisters O'Nealia Hart and Rose Womack with a birthday party on Saturday, March 10. I have never seen so many relatives together except at reunions. I really do know now that most people in Lufkin are kin to many folks.
I dropped by the estate sale of Aline Jones that was handled by David and Bonny Hicks. I saw Mary Read and Nancy Hicks while I was there.
On Friday, I went to the Quilt Guild of the Pineywoods, Needles in the Pines Quilt Show, at the First United Methodist Church. The quilts get prettier each year. Some quilters that I saw were: Jim Haley, chairman; Marilyn Edens, Jeannene Courtney with husband Newt, Cecile Braden, Dee McDaniel, Jenny Caton, Verna Griffith, Sylvia Ford, Joe Thompson, and Judy McPherson. These are just a few that showed over 125 quilts in the exhibit. I went to the Museum of East Texas and their exhibit will continue, and you need to go see these quilts. An old one was quilted in 1920 by Pearl Johnson, mother of Mrs. Simon Henderson, Jr., and loaned by Joie and Bubba Henderson. Lawanna Ray has loaned her great-great-grandmother's quilt that was made back in the 1800s. There are some 60 quilts in this show. Elma Alexander called to tell me that I needed to go see this exhibit.

Ernest and I were privileged to attend the promotion ceremony for our son Charles Andrew Jumper to Colonel at the Pentagon on March 6. We spent a week touring the Washington D. C. area and I will report on it later. Attending along with Ernest and me were Shari, Tyler and Marcy Jumper, Julie Jumper-Morris, Nancy (Jumper) and Michael Herde with Hannah, Isabelle, George and Sarah, Milton Hickman, Tamesha Jumper and Bill Vernon. I was able to pin the eagle on Charlie's baret'. The other family members pinned eagles on his coat and shirt. It was a wonderful day for all of the family and we are so proud of Charlie. You all need to give me more respect since I am the mother of a full bird Colonel. Charlie has served in the Army for 24 years and is a dedicated military person.
