Diboll is off to their best start in baseball since 1984 after winning the championship in the Hudson baseball tournament this week. The Jacks win 4 games in the Hudson tournament to run their season record to 6-0. Team members include Josh Stifle, Philip Chapman, Travis Wallace, Kennedy Scott, Damien Miller, Willie Vasquez, Arturo Morado, Scott Reeves, Freddie Vasquez, Josh Shurley, Duanne Ligon, Lucio Monroy, Randall Farley and Coach Mark Kettering.
Miss Abby Anthony of Diboll is selected as candidate in the 1997 Miss Texas National Pre-Teen Program, to be held at the Waco Civic Center.

Lufkin Pumper No.9 takes former Fire Chief D.C. McPherson for final ride. The late chief was a 42-year veteran of the Lufkin Fire Department.
Lufkin High School Senior James Hallmark and Neil Bowman are presented the E.E. Hess Memorial Awards for mathematics and engineering excellence by the Pineywoods Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.
Controversial trial lawyer William Kuntsler speaks at Stephen F. Austin State University. Kuntsler former defenders include Dr. Martin Luther King, the Attic State Prison inmates, the Chicago Seven, Adam Clayton Powell, H. Rap Brown and Stokley Carmichael. The University Center for Ideas & Issues Committee sponsored Kuntsler's visit.
