Diboll team to take part in annual Relay for Life set May 4 - 5

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a time when communities gather and everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. Teams camp out and team members take turns walking around a track. Each team has a representative on the track at all times during the event. Diboll ISD's Relay team has been participating for the past seven years.

Relay brings together millions of people from all walks of life to raise money to help prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from the disease. While raising funds, members also raise awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and patient support.

Angelina County's Relay for Life will be Friday, May 4, at 7:00 p.m. until Saturday, May 5, at 7 a.m. at Lufkin Middle School.

The first lap will be walked by cancer survivors, while team members and spectators cheer them on. Next, survivors are joined by their caregivers (families, doctors, friends, etc.) as they walk the second lap. After that, team members hit the track to walk continually until the end of Relay.

When the sun goes down, luminaries line the track to honor those who are surviving cancer and to remember those who have lost their battles. This ceremony symbolizes the hope and perseverance with which we all continue to fight.

There are many events planned during Relay, as well as vendors who sell everything from food to chances to win great prizes.

There are several ways you can help in the worthwhile cause if you can't take part in the actual events. You may give a tax-deductible donation to the American Cancer Society; Purchase luminarias to honor or remember cancer victims for $5 each; or join a Relay for Life team. Come out to the Relay for a night of fun and to show your support.

For more information, please call the American Cancer Society office at 936-634-2940 or toll-free at 1-800-ACS-2345.

Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
