All Around Lufkin

By Janice Ann Rowe

The Angelina Alliance for Children held their 5th Annual Student Art Sale and Silent Auction. The theme is "Transformation" and this year the Angelina College Theatre Department under the direction of Kari Raine came up with the concept, execution, and designs for the transformation of a butterfly from the caterpillar who was Katie Brose, to the cocoon who was Casey Lilley, to the drying butterfly who was Brittnee Broussard to the final butterflies who were Stephanie Pennebaker and Courtney Gaither. They were like mimes standing in the lobby of the Civic Center. Vallie Cross, on the advisory board, called them "living sculptures". Sarah Jackson from Angelina College was taking photos of the different ones, as was Woodie Hicks. Mayor Jack Gorden read the proclamation as the Alliance's flag was raised at the event. The Lancewood Mini Mart after 38 years is literally gone. All that needs to be done is to jack hammer all the concrete and haul off everything. Lucy Oates, widow of owner Curtis Oates, is anxious to have a rolling lawn to the street. The Lancewood neighborhood misses Curtis and the store, which was a directional landmark for visiting travelers and a quick fix for items needed in a hurry.

I was in line behind Millicent Irish and in front of Robert Warren getting boiled crawfish at the Polk's Pick It Up on highway 69 north. Millicent told me that she learned to peel crawfish because she is from southern Louisiana.

Corky is the executive assistant to the Chancellor at his alma mater and Willie is from Lubbock, so it was going home for them. This is Corky's third time to go out of retirement to work. He has promised Willie that she could spend a week out of the month in Houston with grandchildren. Corky will be teaching a seminar in the fall and is excited about all of the change. We wish them well and will miss them.

While Joy Fredrick, Carolyn Haney and I were in Austin with Sara Rathgeber, we were looking at our 1955 high school annual. Joy squealed when she saw a picture of Winnie Smith, who was teaching home economics for her first year. She looks the same to us.

I was in Wal-Mart on Friday before Easter and the only person that I saw that I knew was Vickie Boren. We were rubbing elbows with the crowd.

Dorothy Temple had her grandmother Matilda O'Quinn's 1956 Chevrolet in the Wells Homecoming Parade. Buddy Walker drove his 1963 white Corvette convertible with red interior with his niece Madison Corley waving to the crowd and his dad Berwyn Walker as passengers. Dorothy said that the 1950 babies won over the 60's babies since her car won. Craig and Marian Corley and Dorothy O'Quinn Walker were riding in the truck to be sure and Dorothy and George Temple had no trouble with the 1956 car. John and Charlie Liles and wives were on horse back in the parade. Judy Williams called Dorothy that they had won. George, Jr. and Anna Temple came for the homecoming. This was the first time in a long while that all of the Walkers had been together since Buddy is a Captain Chaplain in Germany. Berwyn and Dorothy Walker celebrated anniversary 54 on April 5 and Marian Corley celebrated her birthday on April 2. So it was an early celebration for these occasions for the family.

Robert Cerbo will provide the music. Contact Woody or Don for a reservation at $5 per person if not a member of Crown Colony.

The Reverend Bettie Kennedy was the guest at the First Christian Church's Good Friday service where she portrayed Mary Magdalene. She cleverly inserted from the book of John chapter 20 verse 26 where Jesus said "here is your Mother" and Bettie said if she (Mary Magdalene) had been Jesus' wife he would have mentioned her. She passed out stones that were inscribed with "you without sin ". Susan Ashburn helped her pass out the stones. It was a special day to start the Easter celebration. Catch you around.
