Throughout Diboll, East Texas and beyond, people are sharing stories and offering prayers for Arthur Temple, Jr., the town's biggest booster and one of the region's most influential businessmen, who suffered a recent heart attack.

U.S. Congressman Jim Turner speaks at First Friday Luncheon at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin and tells folks balance budget is realistic in his first term.

Jimmy and Mavis Trout of Diboll announce the engagement of their daughter Helen Christine Trout, to Gregory Alan Stephens, son of Neal Stephens of Lufkin and the late Billie Stephens.

Luis Alberto deJesus meets McGruff, the Crime Dog at the Parent Fair held at Diboll Junior High School. The fair is a cooperative effort between DJH and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission.

A Citizens Committee is approved by the Angelina County Commissioner's Court to help county officials study and assess future needs regarding a new county jail facility. The eleven residents of Angelina County on the committee are Dave Martinez, J.W. Reeves and Elsie Bell of Pct. 1; Bennie Moye, George Harris and Billy Daniel of Pct. 2; Jimmy Loomer, Jimmie Marshall and Denton McCoy of Pct.3; and Opal Gant and J.T. Hambrick of Pct.4.

The Diboll ISD board of trustees accepts the resignation from high school band director Cathie Cain.

Receiving 25-year service awards from Texas Foundries at their annual awards banquet are Harold Yost, Norris Thomas, Virginia Martin, Minnie Kirkland, Joe Marsh, Jack wade, Hollis Thornton, David Allen, Richard Noble, Herbert Hebert and Guadalupe Flores.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Capps celebrate 25th year wedding anniversary with dinner party at their home with friends and family.

Reed & Morris Drilling Company drill earth core samples at the new proposed high school site on Farm Road 1818 to determine foundation needs for the buildings.

St. Cyprian's Episcopal School host public auction and garage sale on the school grounds in Lufkin and items donated for the cause range from clothes to toys to tools to office equipment.

Pilot Club of Diboll awards Pilot Club Scholarship to former Diboll High School student Amy Ward who is attending Texas Bible College of Houston.

Goodwill Industries of Southeast Texas receives $5,000 grant from the T.L.L. Temple Foundation to equip the organization's donation stations.

Diboll High School's basketball standout Frank Lane is named to play in two all-star games- Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Camp in Waco and Texas High School Coaches Association in Fort Worth.

San Augustine's girls team wins District 18-3A golf tournament with a score of 455 to beat out Diboll. Team members include DeAnne Little, Mary Gail Johannessen, Kristie Thomas, Ellen Saulsbury and Tania Byley.

Diboll's boys golf team wins District 18-3A golf tournament easily by beating out San Augustine and qualifying for the region tournament. Team members include Roger Shadix, Chad Conner, Robert Wells and Troy Maxwell.

Bro. Jimmie Moye receives plaque for outstanding leadership as chairman of the deacon board of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Diboll.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Rock band, the Doobie Brothers, performs in concert at the fourth annual East Texas Country Fair held in the SFA Coliseum in Nacogdoches.

The Free Press wins its second School Bell Award by the Texas State Teacher's Association at the press convention held in San Antonio.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben Scarborough celebrate 50th wedding anniversary with reception in the fellowship hall of the Denman Avenue Baptist Church in Lufkin with friends and family.

The "Over 60" group attends the Diboll nutrition program held at the First Baptist Church and later is treated to an Easter egg hunt. Senior citizens scoured the woods, grass and trees for eggs in the afternoon after the noon meal.

Diboll High School football standout Donald Coleman is named to play in the Texas High School Coaches All Star game to be held in Texas Stadium.

Diboll Pee Wee League completes their first draft and team names. The four team names and coaches are Cats, John Shepherd; Aces, Jerry Willis; Jacks, Charles Mann; and Bears, Mike Sanford.

Diboll's golf team of John Oates, Jimmy McClain, Gandy Stubblefield and Bryan Faircloth wins District 17-2A golf tournament with team score of 327.

Diane Garrett of the Lady Jack golf team qualifys for the regional golf tournament as she was a medalist in the District 17-2A tournament.

U.S. Navy Seaman Johnny R. Rast of Diboll completes recruit training at the Naval Training Center, Orlando, Florida.

The B.T. Express brings their hit record, "Do It Till You're Satisfied" to the Family Affair Club in Diboll for the big Spring Festival Show.

There is fundraiser/shower held at the Zavalla Civic Center to benefit the Dan Raburn family who lost their home recently by fire.
