The food Thursday and salad lunch on Friday are catered by Texas Baking Company and Style Show clothes and accessories are from the vendors. I bought the "Big Ticket" for $50, which will include the preview party, luncheon and style show and entry all three days to the market. Single tickets to the preview party are $35 and single luncheon and style show tickets are $25.

The new walking track at Anderson School was dedicated to the memory of Karen Kimmey Steed, a teacher for ten years in the fourth grade, who suffered an AVM on the Saturday after Thanksgiving 2006, was in the hospital a week and passed away on December 3. At the dedication on March 22, the students released balloons and read poems in Karen's honor. Barbara Lazarine, principal, and all of her teachers were so helpful when Karen was ill. Karen's brother, Charlie Kimmey, brought his grill from Temple and cooked 450 hotdogs for the students and facility in appreciation from the family: Charles and Doris Kimmey, Stephen Steed, Stephanie and Matthew Hyde, Mary and Ronnie King, Kyle and Kendall, Karen's aunts Curtis Morris and Ruth Waltrip. There is a granite bench along the track with in inscription about Karen who walked twice a day, and this project would be near and dear to her heart. Karen, at 51 years old, had taught for over 30 years at the Lufkin State School, Hackney, Brandon and Garrett. Mary Kimmey King said that 8 laps around the track make a mile. It is a pretty place to walk. I might see you there.

Members of the First Christian Church youth group spent their Spring Break in Copper Mountain, Colorado. Youth Minister, Cory Glover, led the group of students and was accompanied by several parents and church members. The kids had a wonderful time skiing, and several of the adults were seen on the slopes as well. Community time each night found the group enjoying food and fellowship. There was lots of music, laughter, songs, slide shows, sharing of ideas, and Bible studies. They even celebrated Enid Hunter's birthday while on the trip with a brownie cake. There were rousing games of dominoes and times of prayer and communion for the group. Hundreds of photos were taken...some funny, some serious, and some just of the majestic views. Those making the 23 hour bus ride (one way) were Cory and Marlene Glover, Mike, Enid, and Cameron Hunter, Jeff and Dylan Goodier, Artie, Donna, Hannah, and Austin Anderson, Tyler Durham, Maggie Durham, Chris Boatman, Robert Squyres, Ron, Kathy, and Megan Yeager, Chuck and Bonnie Robinson, Liz Speer, Tony Schroeder, Andrew Schroeder, Shelby Garcia, Amanda and Logan Cannon, and Mason Denman.

The Easter Bunny had a crowd at Brittain Hill hosted by Joe and Dixie Brittain. In from Mesquite were Ted and Ruth Chinn with girls Elaine, Katherine and Hannah. Four-year-old twins Katherine and Hannah were singing, "Santa Claus is coming to Town" Saturday in the snow. Otto Brittain came with Keith and Pat Brittain from Waco, and daughter Laura Brittain from Dallas; Kim and Janie Brittain and sons Allen and Joe came from Garland; Jay and Diana with son Jordan from Austin; Louise Lindsey; Robert and Abban Lastovica and children Logan, Mollie and Mattie from Fredericksburg; Sebastian Nowl from Germany, an exchange student with the Lastovica's, was welcomed into East Texas. Abby Root was in from Texas Tech. Patricia Brown with Jody and Debra Brown and son Ethan who is minus his first tooth; Bob and Betty Jumper from Apple Springs rounded out the crowd of Brittain kinfolks. Betty saved her garden from the snow by covering it with hay; thankful it never got below freezing.

Joe Brittain, son of Kim and Jane Brittain, earned his Eagle Scout Award in Garland where he is a junior in high school. Also attending the ceremony was his grandmother Barbara Cockrell. Also attending were Ruth and Ted Chinn from Mesquite with Elaine, Hannah and Katherine. For Joe's project he distributed flyers asking for old band instruments, which he refurbished and donated to the Garland Schools. His brother Allen has been accepted to Baylor.

Ethan Brown, son of Debra and Jody Brown, had nurse Patty at Peavy Primary pull his first tooth. His parents missed out on this big event and his "Granna" Pat Brown said that the tooth fairy left Ethan $5 plus fairy dust on his pillow. Times have really changed from the dime that the tooth fairy left us.

Pat and Buddy Colmer spent three months in the Texas Valley in Pharr at the Texas Trails RV Resort. They square and round danced almost every day and enjoyed their stay and look forward to going next year.

Jean and Oscar Dillahunty had a hummingbird on March 28 that almost pecked on their window looking for their feeder that had hung there last year. Seems that they do return to the same spot every year.

Elizabeth Hearne (634-4331) and Mary Lynn Neal (639-3188) are reminding members of their 1952 class that there will be a planning meeting for their 55th class reunion at 6:30 Tuesday, April 24 in room 202 at the Family Life Center at Lufkin First Baptist Church.

Have you heard about the "Kitchen Band" Concert at PineCrest Retirement community? Some of the players are Joy Coble on the rub board; W. D. Thames on the slide whistle; Sarah Jane Thames on the bells; Gaston Meadows on the rub board; Eloise Richardson on the piano; Lloyd Richardson on the wash tub base fiddle; Laurette McKewen on the triangle, Jerry Kocar on the spoons and the director is Judy Kocar. There are about 25 in the band and they play Little Liza Jane, Shine on Harvest Moon, and Pop Goes the Weasel which is their favorite. We might have to go to a concert when they perform.

Kenneth Jeffrey gave me one of his Coldwell Banker Donovan Real Estate cards as he told me about daughter Jennifer Jeffrey's engagement to Darin Bell of Lubbock. Darin is in his residence for family practice in Anchorage, Alaska where Jennifer is a Physical therapist. Lisa Haglund is Jennifer's mother.

Andy Arnold, son of Lynell Stover and Mike Arnold, is at First Bank & Trust East Texas on Hwy 94 in the Trust Department. He is a finance graduate from LSU and we are glad to have him in Lufkin.

Betty Camp broke her hip and is recuperating with help from Carol Moore and Mack Camp. She was with Jerry and Carol Moore for Easter lunch.

Barbara Holmes was enjoying a visit from daughter Jennifer Haar for several days. I saw Dolly and Jack Hudgins in the grocery store. Jack gave them a scare but is doing much better.

The LHS Classes of 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968 have mailed "save the date" cards for their combined reunion to be at the Civic Center on September 29. If you have not received a card, contact the Alumni Association at 936-632-4155 with your correct address. The post office no longer delivers mail to the rural route numbers so we need your street or 911 addresses.

Terri and Mike Windsor saw daughter Julie on television dancing on the sidelines with the University of Texas Pom Dancers at the Big 12 basketball tournament in Spokane, Washington.

Sam Griffin brought me pictures of The Sons of the Republic of Texas Chapter 56's installation of officers: President, Jack Irish, Secretary/Treasurer, Ernest Rowe; program chairman, Tom Gann; and not present was Vice President, Bob Bowman.

Anita Williams has been under the weather with arthritis and has help from grandson Clee Quisenberry. Daughter Fran is in San Antonio and her son Lively is in Galveston. Anita spent two weeks after Christmas with granddaughter Mary Fran Williams Espinosa in Round Rock with her children Adam, Ashlan and Dre. Anita teaches a Bible Class at Lufkin First Baptist Church.

Romy Polk with 8-year-old daughter Mary Grace, and Joann Roquemore, Becca Chance with eight-year-old daughter Caroline and Emily Shelton went to Chicago for a "girls week end" to celebrate the little girl's birthday. They went to the premier American Girl Place in Chicago where they had an incredible dinner and the dolls had their own seats. They saw the live play in the theatre, and had their dolls hair done in the salon. Other sights were the Chicago Institute of Art, Children's Museum and the Navy Pier. Joann says that they are planning an American Girl Place in Dallas at the Galleria called American Girl Boutique & Bistro, which will be a new concept. We will watch for the grand opening.

Robbie Warren has been after me to watch Paula Deen on the food channel 58 at noon. I listened to her one day last week and does she have that southern accent which she should have being from Savannah, Georgia. I enjoyed watching her because she tasted everything that she cooked.

The 8th grade DI (Destination Imagination) team from Lufkin Middle School placed fourth out of 19 teams at the state competition in Mesquite. Those students competing were Amy Yates, Frances Ainsworth, Julianne Ford, Claire Inselmann, Meagan Yeager and Dakota Freeland. On Friday night, they did pin trading at the University of Texas at Dallas when the weather turned so bad that the area was under tornado warnings. They were moved from rooms to interior rooms and once the lights were off for a time. Jane Ainsworth has been their coach.

Save the date for the Hospice in the Pines Toast to be at the home of Wilbur and Linda Alexander on Thursday, May 10 according to Demetress Harrell, director of Hospice in the Pines.

I was able to get a ticket at the last minute to see "Wicked" on stage at the Hobby Center in Houston. The fun group was Bettie Powell, June Billingsley, Janis Tucker, Rita Bowers, Curry Jo Boesch, Nedra Tillman, LaJune Bradley, Dot Brookshire, Chip Thompson, Barbara Peterson with Kate, Jessie Conner, Charlene Cortines, Wilma Dobrec, Mary Hubbard, Tommie Jan Lowery, Helen McCarty, Doris Johnson, Earnest and Clelon Hayden, Julia McKelvy, Athena and William Petty, Judy Semlinger, Chubby Slack, George and Laura Thannisch, Thalia Tierney and others plus the tour director Linda McGaughey. We met Linda's daughter Tracey Turpin and friend at the theater. George Thannisch was called "zig zag" because this was the way he suggested that the group disembark the bus instead of one side at a time. It was faster. In the crowd at the play were Linda and Sparky Sparks, Paula and Joe Lee with Janie, Kathlyn and Kyle.

I will not give the play away, but it is the story of the early life of the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and Glinda in the Wizard of Oz. You can get some the group to fill you in, but the music was marvelous as were the sets and costumes. If you get a chance to see "Wicked" do so. It would be worth your time.

Catch you around town: Janice Ann
