All Around Lufkin by Janice Ann Rowe

The Junior League girls did a super job on their Spring Time & Fabulous Finds Market. I heard several people buying Christmas presents for family and graduation gifts. I bought things but ended up giving them before Christmas because I usually loose them when I put them in that safe place. The committee was: Gina Green chairperson, Nancy Ramsey, Emily Parks, Tina Hance, Mendi Brent, Samie Montes, Michelle Green, Kelly Self, Reba Squyres, Michelle Haney, and Michele Warren.

Thursday was the Preview Party to shop early, and some that I saw there enjoying the hors d'oeuvres catered by April Didrikson at Texas Banking Company were: Jennifer Garrett, Misty Croley, Jeannie Cook, Kay Hendricks, Staci Hodges, Kirsti McCullough, Joie Henderson, Sally Denman, Susy Shands, E'Lisa Hurst, Cheryl Arnold, Mary Moore, Valena Spradley, Lisa Warner, Julie Zeagler, Kim Kassaw, Allyson Langston, Sandra Sorrell, Nancy Ramsey, Ann Caskey, Patti Smithhart, Len Medford, Susan Sumners, Mary Jane West, Debra Moore, Cathey Friesen, Jonna Jones, Andrea Friesen, Susan Harris, Ladeen Pluss, Martha Chandler, Brenda Elliott, Tamesha Root, Fran Glenn, G.G. Raley, Joann Roquemore, Romy Polk, Harriett Tamminga, Marianna Duncan, Jane Ainsworth, Brigette Henderson, Kelley Moore, Dana Smithhart, Barbara Corbett, Becca Chance, Jennifer Conway, Anita Caraway, Diedra Oates, Terri Thigpen, Carolyn Beavers, Carolyn New, Hilary Howard with Cora, Emily Watts, Terri Zeleskey, and Avery Rhodes. Crown Colony employees Angie Reece, Trecina Ilesanmi and Will McElroy were serving us as we were shopping. Our favor was a "shot glass" from Texas Baking Company with a chili shot in it along with a layered dip, potato skins, jalapeno cornbread turkey sandwiches, buffalo burgers and several desserts.

The Sustainers had a "Sweet Shop", and I enjoyed visiting with many people on Friday that were shopping. I hate that I can't list your names. At my luncheon table were Mary Jane West, Debra Moore, Nancy Moore, Sarah Beth Teutsch, Len Medford, and Cindy Taylor. Tara Watson was the mistress of ceremonies for the style show that featured clothes and accessories from the vendors. There were over 100 that attended lunch also catered by Texas Baking Company. Linda Clark, from Huntington with her jewelry, is always a vendor and we enjoy visiting with her. Brenda Sullivan, owner of the Garden Gate, had a prime spot. A new shop Ooh-la-la Boutique that is downtown Lufkin was a vendor as were the House of Traditions, Story Wright Printing and the Tardy Bell. I learned that Cabin Fever has closed, but they were at the show. There were many things for the young folks, and they were a hit. Next year plan to be there for a ¡fun several days.

The Museum of East Texas has several Saturdays that you can see the quilt exhibit. Saturday, April 28 is Celebrate Paint for children taught by Gary Parker and Agnes Smith. Saturday, May 5, Let's Have Fun Quilting by Jim Haley will teach each child to create a nine-patch square of their very own. Materials will be supplied and volunteers will be available. It is limited to 20 over the age of 10. All must be children or grandchildren of Museum members. Call 629-4434 for more information.

The Junior League Sustainer's had a Luau at Crown Colony Country Club. Due to rain, the tropical buffet was inside for the over 100 that attended. Our table consisted of John Bates, Mary Leah and Don Duran, Ladeen and Jim Pluss, Jane and Ken Johnson, Woodie Hicks, Ernest and me.

Martha Bates was in Austin to see three-year-old granddaughter Campbell in her pre school program. Martha will have to tell you what Kenneth got on video of Campbell. Fran Glenn and Tamesha Root did a wonderful job of planning.

Jeanette Davis fell about three weeks ago and broke her hip in three places and her wrist. She is in Memorial in rehab. We wish you a speedy recovery. You have had plenty of practice from recoveries. You are in our prayers.

On Friday, Sarah Murray, Thelma Roach, Kathleen Jumper, and Judy Winger went to the Dogwood Garden Club plant sale and to lunch at Mar Teres. I told them that I had yarrow to spare, and Judy was to come get some. Sarah said they were called "Hazel Olsen's girls" and were happy that she was back in her apartment in PineCrest. Bonnie Stout Gittinger was able to visit Hazel while she was in the hospital in Houston.

Rosemary Blackstock is busy in San Augustine with the opening on May 3 of Bogard's on Broadway Emporium on the square owned by Sharon and Charles Bradberry. Rosemary has clothes in her booth, Cherry Burnette has children's books, Martha Butts has antiques, Shirley Baum and Janice Moore have a potpourri of items. There are pictures, photographs and old Texas history books for sale. Their hours are 10 to 5 o'clock Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We will have to check on them when they open. Close by is Red Dirt and Roses Antiques and Tea Room.

Beverly Slaughter's cat Shango was the winner of the Animals Gone Wild photo contest at the Houston Zoo. She sent pictures of the winner over the Internet.

Jody and Jimmy Tinkle had their first hummingbird on Saturday.

Pam and Billy Fitzgerald have a senior at LHS, Natalie, and I learned about her brothers: Jacob, currently serving as pastor of Glenn Garden Baptist Church in Fort Worth and his wife Micaela, are graduating from Southwest Seminary on May 11 and will be moving to Lufkin. He will be the new pastor of the First Baptist Church in Zavalla. Micaela is a Licensed Professional Counselor in family and marriage. Wade Fitzgerald has been teaching and coaching in Huntington for two years. His wife, Morgan, will graduate from UTMB in Galveston in December when she will be a physical therapist. Pam and Billy are fortunate to have them all close to home. Pam said, "Grown children can be so fun". Just wait for the grandchildren.

Barb and Tom Flournoy are the proud grand parents of Adeline Nicole Ellis, daughter of Nicole and Chris Ellis. Adeline is the sister of Preston, 6; Chandler, almost 4; and Hudson, almost 2. She was born April 20 in the Austin Area Birthing Center and weighed 7 lbs, 15 oz and was 20 and 1/ 4 inches long. Nicole and Chris live in Round Rock, and that is where Jenny and Kenneth Bates had the Ellis boys during the birth. Adeline is the 14th grandchild for Barb and Tom. The other grandparents are Bill and Gail Ellis, great grandmothers are Ruby Flournoy and Jane Durham.

I learned that Jody and Jimmy Tinkle usher for the Broadway Series and TUTS performances in Houston at the Hobby Center. They were at the last two Saturday matinee performances of "Wicked" and saw some of the Lufkin bunch and the Jack Darnells at one performance. They usher about once every six weeks. Gaylon Wright is a scanner of tickets. Jody likes to usher on the fifth floor because of the good view. They leave Lufkin around 9 a.m. to arrive at the theater at noon. Some days they stop to have a snack and eat on the way home at either Arandas Restaurant in Humble or the Potato Patch on 1960 and I45 which is much like Lambert's in Missouri with the home made rolls and pass around vegetables. Jody listed some of the up coming shows for 2008 like "Hello Dolly", "Whistle Down the Wind", "A Wonderful Life", and others.

Hayley Haglund, daughter of Wayne Haglund and Vickie Evans, was named Teacher of the Year by her fellow teachers at Stephen F. Austin Middle School in Irving Texas. She teacher eighth grade reading and English.
