ALL AROUND LUFKIN Janice Ann Rowe

Sharon Adams shared with me a story about Kelly Musick Smith. When Kelly was born, she had a failing liver. Her first liver transplant was in Baylor Hospital at age 3. She was the seventh person in the state of Texas in 1984 to have a successful liver transplant. The story made news all over the country. Kelly went 16 years with the first liver and suddenly it quit. She received her second transplant when she was 19 and has kept that liver for over five years. This liver now has cirrhosis. The family was told that something attacked this liver and is virtually destroying it. Two years ago in June, Kelly had son Karson Bryce Smith. He is as healthy as he can be. Kelly is now on two lists for a new liver, and at age 20 they were told that they were two people ahead of Kelly. The transplant operation could be performed either in Baylor Hospital in Dallas or Baylor Hospital in Fort Worth. They will get the information when they get the call that there is a donor. The family will be required to stay in Dallas or Fort Worth for three months after the surgery with multiple expenses. The Reverend Elton Musick, Kelly's father says, "God has taken care of us before, we feel sure that he will take care of us again. What He has done before He can do again." There is a fundraiser to help Kelly and her family with expenses. They are asking the community to sign a nightshirt for Kelly to take with her to the hospital. A donation of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Sharon Adams, owner of Grizzley's, said that to sign the shirt would be free but you would have to pay the donation to use her pen. Lisa at Grace Baptist Church 936-637-3059 or Sharon Adams at 632-5924 will know where you can find the shirt. To get information on Kelly's progress you can go to www.gracebaptistlufkin.com and click on the tab Kelly. She is in our prayers.

The Texas Forestry Museum's Sawmill Supper had a big crowd. I had a plate full of beans cooked by Clarkie Brown, John Ippolito, John Thannisch and Chuck Robinson. Dorothy Brock and Bertie Birdwell had the cornbread and Billie Coats and Jenny Murphy served slaw. Serving drinks were Nell and Wendell Addington and Lorrie Addington. Alta Slack and Addie Pheonix were the ticket sellers. Showing their talent in the old art of tatting were Sadie Allison, Janet Paneitz Ard, Carol Mathis and Mary Flowers. Ernest always brings one of Sadie's home and this year it was an ant. Everyone was enjoying the Davy Crockett Dulcimer Society's music. The SFA students were serving extra drinks and the Board members were on hand helping.

Billie Willmon had told me about a crystal spider that she had received from a lady in Diboll. I saw her working the election at the Courthouse annex when I voted FOR the constitutional amendment that will be on the May 12 ballot. She brought me one with the story of the Legend of the Christmas Spider. It will be on my Christmas tree. Thanks Billie.

Don Dickerson retired and spends time working on Gann Cemetery records. He said that the oldest grave is 1861 and they have 4,000 buried at Gann. Howard Daniel helps him. The Keltys Reunion will be October 20.

Gloria Ogden had to buy a ticket to the Texas Forestry Museum's Sawmill Supper since she had not been volunteering this year. She was telling Howard Daniel that she had vegetables in her flower beds from compost collected at his house. Tomatoes and squash plants were some that she mentioned.

June Clement has a bottle tree and brought Judy Perry one. They came from Mississippi where the prisoners make them. We will have to check out their trees.
