The DISD board of trustees appoints Beth Wilbanks to director of elementary curriculum and instruction; former DHS principal Brent Hawkins to director of secondary curriculum and instruction; and former assistant principal Daniel Lopez to high school principal.

Goldstar EMS unveils its expansion into the air medical field by beginning operations of its Angel Flight, both at Angelina County Airport and at Memorial Health System of East Texas in Lufkin.

The Central ISD receives $44,000 grant from the Texas Technology Infrastructure Fund for Central Elementary and $425 from the Texas Education Agency for the school district's libraries.

Karen Olgletree, Brookhollow Elementary School teacher, is selected Angelina County Teacher of the Year for 2002.

Three-time Olympic gold medals (1996) Josh Davis delivers commencement address at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Richard Ahrens is named Chief Operating Officer for Memorial Health System of East Texas in Lufkin.

U.S. Marine Private James Haffa of Huntington, graduates from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Base, Camp LeJeune, North Carolina.

Mysti Gayle Jones, Diboll High School senior, is named Diboll Rotary Student of the Month for May.

Angelina College journalism students attend the Texas Intercollegiate Convention in Fort Worth. Members of the AC student newspaper and magazine staff are attending are Erin Bryan, Tammy Cuthbert, Barbara GIlbreath, Shandra Breed, Clarisa Carroll, Donald Molley, Tim Spencer, Randall Huffman, Joel Crawford, and instructors Jan Anderson-Paxson and Dr. Elaine Jackson.

Joy White is named 2002 Parent of the Year for Diboll High School during the DHS Renaissance Academic banquet held at the Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center in Diboll.

The Lufkin Panthers are eliminated from the Class 5-A baseball playoff as they are swept in two games by the Rockwall Yellowjackets 7-2 and 4-1.

The Hudson Hornets are eliminated from Class 3-A baseball playoffs with 3-2 loss to China Springs Cougars at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin and close out the season with 17-12 record.

Named Male Athlete of the Year at Diboll High School is 4-sport letterman Craig Young and Female Athlete of the Year at Diboll High School is track star Tamishia Miller.

TEN YEARS AGO

Diboll City Manager Vernon Cupit announces he will retire at the end of June.

Temple-Inland's Diboll particleboard plant is currently undergoing $10 million retrofit.

George Malone and Ella Cox reaches milestone in their volunteer service at Memorial Health System in Lufkin as they both celebrate the 2000 hours bar mark.

Congressman Jim turner names Jerry Huffman, president and CEO of the Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, to be his District Director.

Lufkin Mayor Louis Bronaugh works in his office at Lufkin City Hall while sitting in a wheelchair to dramatize the efforts of those with disabilities in commemorating Goodwill Industries Week.

LaQuinta earns honors in the "Quest for Best" as top motel/hotel as part of promotion for National Tourism Week sponsored by Lufkin Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Dr. Larry D. Shrake joins The Arthur Temple, Sr. Regional Cancer Center of Memorial Health System of east Texas in Lufkin.

Junior Achievement of Angelina County raises $17,500 at its 1997 Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser. There are 30 teams participating in the fundraiser held at Lufkin Lanes Bowling Alley.

Keith Kraemer is selected to be the new chief appraiser for the Angelina County Appraisal District.

Officers for the Diboll High School Senior Class for 1997 are Patrice Scott, president; Angela Rios, vice president; Sofia Reyes, secretary; J.C. Tobias, treasurer; and Lucio Monroy, class representative.

The T.L.L.Temple Foundation donates $2.5 million to the Alzheimer's Association to establish a major new grant program to fund Alzheimer research.

Seleta Bowman Pounds of Diboll weds Larry Gene Hart in garden ceremony at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Byrd in Lufkin with Rev. Buddy Leach of family Worship and Teaching Center officiating.

Borden Chemical Company officials in Diboll host customers and friends for tours of the company's new offices and laboratory facilities. The open house at the Diboll plant marks the integration of Borden's Resin Development Laboratory into the East Texas operation.

Diboll State Bank wins the showmanship and cooking awards at the Southern Hushpuppy Olympics held in Lufkin. DSB staffers include cooking team members Kathey Whisenhunt, Laurel Harper, Linda Williams and Kim Fairchild; showmanship winners include Sherri Anthony, Rhonda Kenney, Janell Wylie, Lesa Thompson, Vickie Paulsey, Charlotte Parish, Sharon Brown, Kathy Holman, Carla Pate, Carla Byars, Esther Barger and Mona Cowart.

Temple-Eastex Incorporated names David Crager land inspector, Karey L. Lee chief land surveyor and Michael Cook survey party chief.

Nancy Chancellor and Mary Samford announce that Mrs. Chancellor has purchased Mrs. Samford's interest in Kitchen Stuff and ETC in the Lufkin Mall.

The 11th annual arts and craft show is held on the lawn at Renfro's Art Shop in Zavalla. Items of display for sales include handmade items, oil paintings, quilts, dolls, woodwork, carvings, hand-painted jewelry, ceramics, pine cone crafts and needlework.

Newly elected officers of the Diboll Band Boosters are Regilda Shadix, president; Betty Barkley and Nancy Lowther, high school vice presidents; Bessie Burkhalter and Ann Brooks, junior high school vice presidents; Teena Kellam, secretary; Kay Gage, treasurer; and Linda Maxey, reporter.

Lance Linscomb of Fredricksburg signs letter of intent to play basketball at Angelina College and Marvin Eackles of Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana signs letter of intent to play basketball at Angelina College.

Diboll gets its 20th win of the season and makes the playoffs for the first time since they advanced to regionals in 1967 as they thump Hudson 9-1. Chuck Murphy goes the distance for the Jacks on the mound giving up five hits, walking three and striking out five.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Rolston McDuffie announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Carolyn to John Richard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Winston Richard of Diboll.

U.S. Marine Capt. James L. Sachtleben of Lufkin participates in military field training exercise "Solid Shield 77." Capt. Sachtleben is a member of the staff of Amphibious Squadron Eight, homebased in Norfolk, Virginia.

Richard S. Albrecht, Diboll pharmacist, is named to the Region VII Education Service Center Board of Director.

Two hundred fifty volunteers ring doorbells asking for contributions for the Arthritis Foundation in Lufkin, The goal for the Victory March is $1,200.

James K. Greer of Diboll receives his master's degree in agricultural education from Texas A & M University at their spring commencement exercises.

Billy M. Kervin of Diboll is appointed to the rank of warrant officer while serving with Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Hood, Texas.

Diboll school officials are proceeding with plans to begin an elementary level remedial math and remedial reading program here this summer, providing that tuition fees are received from enough parents.

The Indians of the Diboll Little League this season are Verdal Rios, Gregg Rayborn, Cary Grider, Doug Clark, Morris White, David Burt, Kyle Cooke, Jimmy Mettlen, Matt Amason, Ted Cheavens, Randy Barkley, Bryan Holubec, Roger White and coaches Bill Ivey and Bobby Amason.

Deep East Texas Council of Governments, Manpower Services are accepting applications from youths who are interested in applying for summer employment.

Angelina College is offering a Texas Education agency approved course in small engine repair.

Receiving four-year scholarships from the Southland Paper Mills Foundation are Lizabeth Jo Richter (Alvin High School), Rene LaNell Choate (Central High School), David Michael Patarick (Conroe High School),David Ray Weeks (Diboll High School), Shari Susan Horton (Hudson High School), Bobby Neil Bowman, Susan Kay Duren and Gerald Parker ( all of Lufkin High School).

Danita Davison is valedictorian of the Huntington High School senior class this year with a grade point average of 95.66 and class salutatorian is Susan Flurry with a grade point average of 94.66.

Taking part in the new Rainbow Assembly in Huntington are Mrs. Martha Marie Whitfield, Supreme Faith and Supreme Inspector of Texas; Debbie Flournoy, Worthy Associate Advisor; Shelly Clegg, Worthy Advisor; and Mrs. Carmon Johnson, Mother Advisor.

Temple Junior School winners in University Interscholastic League Literary events are Debbie Groom, second in number sense; Doreen Holt, second in prose; Sherri Smith, third in poetry interpretation; Barry Tate, third in number sense; Howard Windham, third in prose reading; Stephen Capps, first in poetry; Mark Holubec, second in ready writing; Robby Cobb, first in prose reading; Brian Miller, first in number sense; and John K.
