Diboll youth victim of gunshot wound

Terrion Jevon Barnes was arrested Sunday morning in connection with the shooting of Eddie Canada, a 17-year-old Diboll youth.

The incident, according to reports, took place near Barnes' home on Kirksey Drive in Lufkin.

Barnes told police that a group of boys from Diboll had been assaulting him since a fight the night before at Pine Wood Park Apartments, also on Kirksey Drive. He also told police that when he ran into the boys at a party Saturday night in Cedar Grove, they threatened to come by his house later and beat him up. It was also learned from Barnes, that he left the party and stopped by his uncle's house to pick up a gun before going home.

Barnes' mother told police, the boys came to the home and began throwing rocks at the front door to get Barnes to come out. According to the report, Barnes came out of the house with his uncle's gun and fired two shots into the air. When the boys turned to run, Barnes shot Canada in the back, the report stated.

The police report indicated the bullet hit Canada in the back missing his spine and exited through his abdomen.

Canada told police that he had been visiting a friend when someone drove by and hsot him in the back.

The report also said that a .380-caliber handgun was recovered by police at the scene of the rime.

Barnes, who was stopped on a routine traaffic stop for speeding, was arrested when it was discovered he had three traffic warrants and was the suspected shooter of Canada. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadlyu weapon and several other charges.

Canada, who underwent surgery on Sunday morning at Memorial Health System of East Texas in Lufkin was listed in stable condition that afternoon, according to a hospital spokesperson.
