Burke History Project underway

Your treasured memories will help collection

The Burke History Project volunteers will again have a table at Ryan Chapel Homecoming, Sunday, June 3, to collect history and information about Burke and its residents. The objective is to publish a complete history of Burke on the World Wide Web at www.burketexas.com. Please visit the site to see what we have done so far.

The information will also benefit The History Center at Diboll, which is also collecting and preserving information and artifacts on Burke history.

Items that will benefit the project include:

€ Old photographs of Burke residents, buildings, homes, work, and social activities

€ Letters, postcards, newspaper clippings, business ledgers, and other old documents connected to Burke.

€ Genealogies of Burke families and kinship relationships

€ Stories and legends passed down from early Burke residents

€ Location of important places such as old roads, springs, homes, businesses, buildings, stores, etc.

€ Information on early businesses such as stores, sawmills, and cotton gins

€ Information on Burke life, such as recipes, games, and music.

€ Burke talk, such as old sayings and words and phrases not used anymore.

So bring your Burke photographs, documents, and stories to homecoming and visit our table and share them with us!

We will have a computer and scanner at the Homecoming to scan your photos and clippings as well as a tape recorder to record your reminiscences. If you would like to write your recollections of Burke, we'd be happy to receive those as well.
