ALL AROUND LUFKIN Janice Ann Rowe

Beth Billingsley, daughter of Cay and Tom Billingsley, graduated from TCU with her BBA degree in finance. She is working in Fort Worth for Range-on-Line Media in sales. Cay laughed and said that Beth was working at the stockyards in Fort Worth, but that was just where her office was. She has clients like Pier I and Estee Lauder that they deal with search engine companies for contracts.

Ryan Squyres, son of Debbie and Reggie Squyres, graduated from UT San Antonio with his Masters in Architecture. He is working for VLK Architectural Firm in Arlington. They specialize in educational buildings and built the American Airlines Educational facility in Dallas.

Woodie Hicks and Edward Hicks went to Houston for the graduation of grandson Matthew Nidoh, son of Kendall Nidoh, from the Northland Christian Academy. Due to an electrical problem, the graduation ceremony had to be moved to another church. Matthew graduated Summa Cum Laude and gave a talk as chaplain of the class. He will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall to major in computer engineering.

Emily Watts had two to graduate in May. Daughter Lindsey graduated from LHS and will be attending Baylor University in the fall. Chip Watts graduated from TCU Magna Cum Laude and will move to Galveston in July to start school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in August. He worked for Dr. Ed Domingue in the summers and does not know what his final decision on a specialty will be. Lindsey will be a counselor at Kickapoo Kamp in Kerrville where there have been four generations of Shelton girls to attend.

Lisa and Sal Soto are the proud parents of twins Ryder Stone Soto weighing 4 lbs 7 oz and Ace Max Soto weighing 4 lbs 15 oz. They were born on May 27 in Lufkin and were 8 weeks early. They were transferred to Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. Their sisters are Sara and Nicole Soto. Grandparents are Mary and Ken Needham, Belin and Jorge Escobedo. Great-grandfather is Max Rosser of San Antonio.

Ken and Mary Needham were at their cabin in Colorado when the early birth came. They stopped in Shreveport to see them before coming to Lufkin.

I saw the sign that said Maddux Building Material was the material supplier for the new building near Cheddar's on the loop, and I called to see what the new business was going to be. It is a Chicken Express.

Nancy and Don Reily participated in the Society for Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelains convention in Nacogdoches. Don was president of the convention that became a national collectors club 12 years ago. Nancy had friends in to view their collection of about 1,000 pieces of Old Ivory China that was manufactured in what is now a part of Poland last manufactured in 1928. Nancy's mother had a set of these dishes and Don started looking for pieces to add to her collection so he has been collecting for about 20 years. When she moved to PineCrest, she gave the set to Don so it would be over 80 years old. Some viewing the Reily collection were: Dot Brookshire, Joyce Gray, Ann Shands, Flora O'Quinn, Joan Temple, Virginia Winston, Mary Gibbs, Martha Chandler, Mary Jule Tatum, Mary Read, Nancy Hicks, J. P. McDonald, Claire McLaurin, and Jeanetta Stewart. Nancy Winston catered some of the food. The national convention will be in Bangor, Maine for 2008. Don and Nancy travel to these conventions and meet the some 75 people. There is one other couple in Texas that are collectors and the rest are around the states. Don said that about 10 years ago no one knew about these porcelain dishes that were works of founder Herman Ohme from the Silesia area of what was Poland and Czechoslovakia. Don has a hand painted set of dishes from the 1890s when women did hand painting on Ohme blank dishes. Most of these dishes have decals on them, and the gold has been hand painted. I did not realize that most china does have decals for the decorations. In the 1890s, the Ohme Company made clear glaze white dishes for hotels. There are the two colors, white and ivory which is creamy. This is the first time that the Reily's have had all of their pieces out at the same time. After the convention in April in Nacogdoches, Don and Nancy had the group for Sunday brunch and served the meal on these special dishes. I laughed when Don said that collecting Old Ivory china was his hobby, and he probably did not spend as much on them as his hunter friends did on their hunting hobbies. When I called to confirm my attendance, Versia Sanders took my name. She works afternoons for Audie Brookshire along with working for the Reilys during the day.

Mark your calendar for the rededication of Brewer Cemetery in Nacogdoches County. It will be June 23 at 10:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the Brewer Cemetery Association. The ceremony will include patriotic music by the Wallace Family Band, a review of the Brewer Family History by Carolyn Ericson, the Presentation of Colors by a local Boy Scout Troop, the Benediction and Dedication Prayer by the Rev. Michael Self, whose forefather was an early minister in the area. They will unveil the newly restored Brewer Historical Marker, which stands in the newly restored Brewer Cemetery originally dedicated in 1816. Joy Coble, a Brewer descendent, gave directions to the cemetery on FM 343 off west loop 224 in Nacogdoches out 12.4 miles from the loop. There will be a Brewer Cemetery sign and a Historical Marker sign at the junction of FM 343 and the Brewer Cemetery Road.

I saw great-grandfather Mack Camp at the post office, and he said that Owen Marshall Thiebert, son of Erin and Jeff Thiebert, is home from Shreveport and doing fine. Owen is the grandson of Carol and Jerry Camp.

I am about a month behind knowing about Thelma Bryant. Hazel Main called from Illinois and told me to check on Thelma. She was in Nacogdoches with her son Bruce at a restaurant when she had a heart attack on May 9. Bruce rushed her to the hospital there where they put in two stents. She had rehab for several weeks and is home with son Mason and his wife Vicki helping around the house. Mason has moved to Dallas from Colorado, and Vicki will be moving when they sell their home. When I visited with Thelma over the telephone, Mason and Bruce were going through her things and "cleaning out her house". She is back to her old self and sounded wonderful over the telephone.

Geneva and Harold Newsom, Dot and Doc Hughey attended the graduation of Laura Hughey, daughter of Karen and Brian Hughey, from Kingwood High School. Also there for graduation was Susan Brown from Florida with her daughter Amanda who is a year old and did not attend graduation. Susan has been visiting in Houston with Karen and Erin Everett who has been her childhood friend.

Jack Hudgins was honored with an 80 th birthday party by wife Dolly for Angelina College colleagues, family and friends that came to wish him well. Family there were Cay and Tom Billings with Beth and John Billingsley, Will Hudgins with 8-year-old son Jackson, Dolly's brother and sister in law, Jack and Polly Moss from Lewisville. Jack and Dolly made the trip to Holland with her travel club on a river cruise early in May and he did fine. I told Dolly that I worried about them.

Brent Horton, son of Jenny and Jimmy Horton, graduated from Huntington High School with his grandparents Tommy and Patsy Hines, Gwen and Bobby Allen, aunt Amy Murphy and his brother Eron Horton attending. Their Project Celebration was at LiveWell.

The Museum of East Texas started their Art Camp on June 4 until August 17. It is for ages four to 17. I loved the brochure of things that will be featured in the coming months. J. P. McDonald said that she had been here 16 years.

Amy Poland, daughter of Linda and Robert Poland, moved to Frisco, Colorado the first of May to begin work as an account executive for Colorado Resort Publishing, a 6-magazine group. She decided to move to the ski area during a family ski trip to Aspen in March with Linda and Robert Poland, Jeanie, Caleb, Claire and little Caleb McCusker. Linda helped Amy move, and they celebrated Cinco de Mayo skiing at Loveland. Jeanie McCusker celebrated the Memorial Day weekend with Amy by skiing at A Basin. They are all looking very forward to several ski trips for the whole family this coming season. Amy has seen Brian and Rebecca Friesen Hunt in Beaver Creek; some others with Lufkin connections are Todd Richert who has moved to Steamboat Springs, Shane Kinnaird and Lee and Jessica Slack Nestor in Denver, Steven and Liz Wayland and their children in Durango.

Janette and J. R. Cox celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary on June 2 with a small party for friends at Manhattan Restaurant. Daughters and sons-in-law Tamara and Jeff Hauser and Rhonda and Jerry Merriman, who have moved to the Saddle Ridge subdivision in Lufkin, were there to celebrate with their parents. Of course you know they had to dance and Destin Sabani had the dance floor ready just minutes before they arrived. "Keep Dancing" Janette and J. R. I love the daisies in your front flowerbeds. I heard that they came from Billy Beavers.

Dot Brookshire shared with me that grandson B. J. Brookshire, son of Laura and Brent Brookshire, escorted visiting duchess Abby Reeves, daughter of Bob and Sheilah Reeves of Center, at the Nacogdoches Heritage Festival. They were childhood friends in Center. Other visiting duchesses from Lufkin were: Jennifer Fougerousse, Taylor Rush, and Katrina Peitersen.

Michael Stevens, son of Mary Margaret and Brad Stevens, was home schooled by his mother and graduated from A Beka Christian Academy on Saturday, June 2 at the Twinland Baptist Church in Houston. Others attending were grandparents Ernest and Janice Ann Rowe, Cordelia and Sidney J. Gardner of Moscow, uncle and aunt Ernest and Barbara Rowe from Livingston, aunt Ann Goff and Ryan from Nacogdoches, great uncle John Edens Carter of New Branufels, and friend Liz Cobb. This was a special occasion for the family and we are proud of Michael and Mary Margaret for this accomplishment.
