The Children's Summer Reading Club will have its big Kick-Off this Thursday June 7 at 2:00pm here at the T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library. Our special guest, The Creature Teacher, will put on a fun, interactive, and educational show featuring a variety of unique and exotic animals. The children will be able to view up close a Ball python (Africa), Bearded Dragon (Australia), Leopard Gecko (Middle East), Blue - tongued skink (Tazmania), African Bullfrog (Africa), and a Spiny - tailed lizard (India and Asia).
June 7th is the last day to register for the Children's and Teen's Summer Reading Clubs. Parents, it has been proven that children who continue to read through the summer vacation retain more of what they have learned during the school year. In view of this knowledge we hope that you will take advantage of this free service to help encourage your children to read this summer.
Father's Day is Sunday, June 17, 2007 so I thought I would share a little bit of the history of this holiday. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across America, other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. Father's Day has become a day to, not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all honored on Father's Day.
