Angelina County native Kenneth Williams accepts Diboll City Council's offer of employment as the new city manager.

Puppeteer, magician and storyteller Julian Franklin of Houston performs for the Texas Summer Reading Clubs Read-to-Me and Reading Club kick-off at the T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library in Diboll.

Recognized with service pins commemorating 25 years service with the Diboll ISD are Kaye McElroy, Linda Mills, Janette Harris and Nettie Mann. Honored for 30 years service to the Diboll ISD are Carolyn Morris, Bebley Garr and Susan Haney.

Angelina County Commissioners accept bids for labor and materials to begin immediate replacement of two bridges spanning Biloxi creek near Bald Hill.

Diboll City Council unanimously approves the city's first billboard ordinance. The new regulation stipulates that one must file for a permit and pay a fee to erect billboards.

Storyteller Anne McCrady of Henderson captures attention of the children who attends the T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library's summer reading program's opening session at the Nelson House.

Colleen Courtney of Diboll Girl Scout Troop 9141 sells 380 boxes of cookies to earn honors as top seller and receive the Go-Getter Award from her troop.

Jimmy Mettlen and Bobby Blanton finish in first place to capture title in the Diboll Coaches Golf Tournament held at Neches Pine Golf Course in Diboll.

Temple-Inland revise its brand name to emphasize business on 1st name basis-non known just "Temple."

Diboll Mill Street is officially renamed Martin Luther King Street by Diboll City Council.

An official Texas Historical Marker commemorating the town of Emporia is erected at the corner of Booker and Maynard Streets in Diboll.Diboll ISD welcomes new teachers: Renee' Lowther & Amy Capps, third grade; Kim Roberts, high school biology/girls athletics; Phil Bailey, high school history/boys athletics.

Mr. and Mrs. Knox Bowman of Diboll celebrate 50th wedding anniversary with reception hosted by their children.

The Angelina County Historical Commission unveils Ewing Historical Marker 17 miles east of Lufkin on State Highway 103.

The Lufkin Daily News is awarded bid for $9,339.88 to print the Angelina College newspaper, "The Pacer" and student schedules.

Major League baseball tryout camps scheduled at Angelina College for the month of June include the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cincinnati Reds, Montreal Expos and the Major League Scouting Bureau.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Longtime Dibollian and DISD educator Dixie Cook is named "Mother of the Year" by the American Diabetes Association.

Lufkin residents Peggy T. Lee and Mildred Morgan wins the annual "42" Charlie Wilson Domino Tournament and are presented with a trip to Washington, D.C. to celebrate the victory.

Temple-Eastex Incorporated names Darin Simpson manager of Diboll Lumber Operations.

John Gullett is named plant manager of Temple-Eastex's Rigid Foam Operation.

Phillip Richard wins new bicycle by selling 30 one-year subscriptions to the Free Press. Phillip is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Richard.

Winston Richard of Diboll is the lucky winner of the 10-speed bicycle given away in Brookshire Bros. promotion.

The summer reading program at T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library gets under way with special visits by Woodsy Owl and Smokey Bear, courtesy of the folks at the Texas Forest Service.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

New officers of Burke Masonic Lodge No. 833 include Willie Bishop, Junior Warden; Bill Weeks, outgoing Worshipful Master; William Carrier, new Worshipful Master; Melvin Ivey, Senior Warden; Woodrow Lee, Secretary, Robert Conner, Treasurer; and Max Jones, Tiler.

The old Camden train depot of the W. T. Carter & Bros. mill in Camden is moved to the Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin. The depot served as headquarters for the Moscow, Camden & San Augustine Railroad.

Southland Paper Mills, Inc. announces the Board of Directors approve in principle with the merger of Southland into St. Regis Paper Company.

The Angelina County Planned Parenthood Center officially opens its doors in Lufkin. Among those attending the opening day reception are Dick Ferguson, executive director for Planned Parenthood in Houston, Carol Zbranek, Clarice Whitaker, Cathy Friesen, Jean Dolben, Gloria Allred, Dorothy Pruett and Genie Flournoy.

The city of Diboll hires Texas A & M University senior Patricia Jared to direct the pilot recreation program in Diboll this summer.

Diana Cook becomes the first bicycle winner in The Free Press summer subscription campaign.
