The Diboll Lumberjacks 7 on 7 squad raided Houston on Saturday, June 9 for the Division 1A/ 3A State Qualifying Tournament at stoic old Rice University. With teams starting out in pools, followed by bracket play the Lumberjacks were amongst the best and it paid off as they are heading to the State Tournament now at Texas A&M Thursday, July 12.
The days competition got started early Saturday morning and the weather started out hot and stayed that way. That, however did not seem to face the locals as they went into their opening POOL A and ran rough shot over all the competition.
The pool consisted of Diboll, Danbury, Bandera and Giddings. Each team was poised to play and Diboll was showing swagger that J.J. Hayes and company could be showing off next Fall in the 11 man game.
After defeating all three of their opponents in the opening pool round the Lumberjacks had secured themselves one of four open spots in the field of 32 that will play for the Texas 7 on 7 Small School Championship.
Other qualifiers in the tournament were Southeast Texas power the West Orange-Stark Mustangs, Waco area team, the Marlin Bulldogs, and finally with an at large bid 1-A strong horse Normangee.
The semifinals saw the Lumberjacks hand down a beating on the Bulldogs of Marlin 42-14. While WO-S defeated Normangee in a close affair that saw a big early Mustang lead fall apart as the 1-A kids came a calling.
Finally the game of the day was on and it was a brutal affair as teams were hot and tired, with the eventual cramps and other ailments creeping up on the Jacks. In the end Diboll missed out on an extra point try in the final minute and the Stangs came back to score the winning points 33 - 32 over Diboll.
