T.L.L. Memorial Library News

Summer Reading fun continued this past week with the teen's exotic drink contest where they made new fruit drinks using various fruit juices and ginger ale. The judge of the contest got to sample new drinks such as "Mango Surprise" and "Pineapple Sunrise". Then, on Thursday, over 70 children enjoyed painting paper pirate hats and sailboats at the Children's Summer Reading Club. More summer fun will continue next week with a fantastic storyteller for the teens and more craft fun for the children.

Hey teens and adults, we have a special treat planned for you. Coming up on Tuesday July 3, at 4:00pm. Shelly Kneupper Tucker, a fantastic teller of tales, will be our guest here at the library. With her spinning wheel or without, Shelly's delightful brand of "yarnspinning" can rock the tent with laughter, bring the crowd to tears, and cause a group to gasp with surprise, or make them shiver with fear. Stories come alive through Shelly's vivid imagination. She paints pictures with words. Not to mention she tells the best ghost stories that I have ever heard. This is one program that you don't want to miss so come on over and join us!

The Children's Summer Reading Club will enjoy a day of crafts on Thursday July 5th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. I'm sure Miss Chaunta has something really fun planned so all you boys and girls be sure and drop by.

P.O.V. (Point of View), public television's acclaimed independent nonfiction film showcase, will launch its 20th Season on June 19, 2007. The series will run at 10 p.m. on Tuesday nights, through October (go to www.pbs.org/pov for updated information. This year's schedule includes: Prison Town, USA by Katie Gallaway and Po Kutchins - it tells the story of Susanville, one California town that tries to resuscitate its economy by building a prison with unforeseen consequences. The Camden 28 by Anthony Giacchino - recalls a 1971 raid on a Camden, New Jersey, draft board office by "Catholic Left" activists protesting the Vietnam War and its effects on urban America. Lumo by Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt and Nelson Walker III - The agonies of present-day Africa are deeply etched in the bodies of women. In eastern Congo on the Rwandan border, vying militias, armies and bandits use rape as a weapon of terror. Jumo Sinai was just over 20 when marauding soldiers attacked her. "Lumo" is her story, tragic in its cruelties but also inspiring for the struggle she wages and the dignity she displays, with the help of an extraordinary African hospital, to overcome shame, fear and the affliction that robs her of a normal life.

Coming up at the Library: Teller of Tales, Shelly Kneupper Tucker, July 3, 4:00-5:00, for grades 6-12 only; Children's Summer Reading Club Lets Get Crafty, July 5, 2:00-3:00; Children's Summer Reading Club Trixie's Magic, July 12, 2:00-3:00; Teen Summer Reading Club Awards Party, July 17, 4:00-5:00.
