Charles William Wells, Sr., 72, of Lufkin, was born June 22, 1934, in Pollok, Texas, the son of the late Berta Lee (Stogner) and Emmett Wells. He passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2007, in a local hospital.
Services for Mr. Wells were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2007, in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Burtis Boles officiating. Interment followed in the Berry Cemetery with full military honors.
Mr. Wells was retired from the United States Navy, following more than 20 years of service to his country. He was also retired from the Texas Forest Service as a Staff Technician. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Wells was an ordained Baptist Deacon, and was admired and respected by many. He was an avid gardener and loved to hunt. He was always singing and touched the hearts of many with his voice.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Johnnie Wells of Lufkin; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles William, II and Becky Wells of Nacogdoches and David Wayne and Evie Wells of Lufkin; daughter, Audrey Jean Wells of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Marie (Sugie) and Michael Mann of Woodville; grandchildren, Marcus, Justin, Little David, Steven, Lewis, Ethen, Cody, Paul, Jack and Henry; sister-in-law and her husband, Della Mae and Bennie Acker of Louisiana; sister, Genevieve Ponce of Lufkin; special nephew and "buddy", Kenneth Watterson; and a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sara Wells; 2 sisters; and 1 brother.
