T. L. L. Temple Memorial Library update

BY NELDA PORTER, Library staff

Last week the Teen Summer Reading Club sailed away on adventures with storyteller, Shelly Kneupper Tucker.

With 16 in attendance, they visited lands where people could cheat death and ghosts were friendly. Then, a few days later, the Children's Summer Reading Club, with over 60 in attendance, made edible jewelry using gummy lifesavers and fruity cereal. What a yummy craft! Jr. Friends of the Library were on hand to give a helping hand.

A big Thanks goes to these great volunteers. It has been a wonderful summer for all the Reading Clubs but like all good things it has to come to an end. The last day to record books was July 7th for the Children's Summer Reading Club and the final program will be July 12th. Teen Summer Reading Club will record books through July 14th and their final program will be July 17th.

Hey kids! The Texas Department of Agriculture is having its 4th Annual Kids Kitchen Corral Contest. They want you to create something healthy to eat and then share your original recipe with them. For contest details and an application packet, pick up a postage-paid card at the Library or e-mail them at kidskitchen@tda.state.tx.us. To learn more about healthy food or to sample the flavor of last year's winners, visit their web site at www.squaremeals.org and get cooking.

High blood pressure is a dangerous condition. You usually don't have any symptoms, so you may not even know that you have it. And it can lead to heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease, the first, third, and ninth leading causes of death in the U.S. The good news, though, is that it is possible to prevent - and control - high blood pressure by making some simple lifestyle changes: lose weight, if necessary, and maintaining a healthy weight; being physically active; following a healthy eating plan; eating less salt and sodium; and limiting your alcohol consumption. Research has shown that a healthy eating plan called DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) can reduce your chances of developing high blood pressure and lower your blood pressure if it is already high. For more information about the DASH eating plan, tips for getting started, sample meal plans, and even recipes, visit the NHLBI's "Your Guide to Controlling High Blood Pressure" at http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/hbp/index.
