Michael, Lorraine, Clark, Mallory and Evan Dorman spent a week in Destin, Florida. Their trip included parasailing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and relaxing on the beach. The fireworks over the Destin harbor and the beaches were outstanding this year in celebration of July 4 th.

Charles Coleman has been in town checking on Hayden Russell who has moved from a Dallas facility to Southland Nursing Home in room 54. He has had visits from his aunts and uncles in the area and is happy to be back in Lufkin. Hayden was in the LHS Class of 1961. He would welcome visits from any of his friends.

I want to tell you about our trip to Connecticut the last of July to see Nancy, Michael, Hannah, Isabelle, George and Sarah Herde. Oscar Dillahunty took Ernest and me on Wednesday, July 18 for our flight from Houston Bush airport to New Canaan, Connecticut. We went to terminal C and tried to check in at the curb and found out that our flight at 11:45 a.m. had been cancelled due to the bad weather at LaGuardia. We had to go inside and reschedule our flight. Our choices were a 1:10 flight to Newark, New Jersey or a 6:55 p.m. flight into LaGuardia. Security took Ernest's shaving cream, toothpaste and deodorant. We took the Newark flight and had to take the shuttle train to terminal E. We ate lunch at 10:45 a.m. at Ruby's Diner. The farther we walked in terminal E, we saw a Pappacitos on the main course and a Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen that was upstairs at the end of terminal E. The flight was delayed several times due to the weather in Newark. We boarded at 1:15 and left after 2:00 p.m. About 5:30 the pilot said that we were going to land in Baltimore, Maryland to get more fuel and wait out the weather. We landed in Baltimore at 6:30 and finally got fuel at 7:10. We taxied to the end of the runway and were to take off at 7:45. There were 20 aircrafts in the air waiting to land at Newark and we would have to wait in rotation to leave. Finally we left at 8:45 Texas time and landed in Newark at 10:30 Eastern time. Our flight took 7 hours instead of 3 hours. Lloyd Krueger with Merritt Limo Service met us in his western hat for our ride to New Canaan, CT. We had a sandwich about 10:45 p.m. since we had not eaten since 3:00 on the plane. We left the airport at 11:50 p.m. and arrived in New Canaan after 1 a.m. Eastern Time. On Thursday, granddaughter Sarah had reading class at 8 a.m. at the high school. Nancy came home and then we took Hannah to her volunteer job at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk from 9:30 to 2:00. We then went to the sidewalk sale by the merchants in Greenwich. Picked up Sarah at noon and went to Fabulous Feasts for lunch in New Canaan. My nose by this time looked terrible. Nancy felt that I needed to see a doctor so we went to Dr. Julia Voytovich 's office and she said it looked like I had impetigo and gave me two prescriptions for an antibiotic and ointment. She said as close as it was near my brain it needed immediate attention and if not better on Saturday to come back. She worked from 9:00 to 12:00. We took the prescriptions to Varnum's Pharmacy where Mike Egerman filled them for $5 each.

Michael, Ernest, Isabelle, and George left at 10:30 a.m. for the baseball game at Yankee Stadium with the Toronto Blue Jays. Yankees lost. At 2:00 we got Hannah from her job and went back to the sidewalk sale for them to try on shoes. When we arrived home, the group was back from the baseball game. Michael had taken Isabelle for her softball game on the New Canaan Storm All-Star team against Wilton All Stars. They won. I met Michelle and Natalie Piehl with Audrey on the team; Beth and Don Black with Brenna on the team. Bailey Black was going to Camp Mystic in Texas and had corresponded with a girl from Lufkin. Beth Black is an Aggie who grew up in Houston.

Michael played softball slow pitch on the Kaster Moving Team that was in the play offs. Michael's team lost and Isabelle's New Canaan Storm won. This is her second year to play on the All Star team in left and right field. Back at the house Hannah, Sarah, and George stayed home. We had BBQ for our dinner.

On Friday, Michael, Ernest, George and Sarah went sailing from 2:00 to 4:00. It was breezy, and they were cruising around Captain's Harbor on Long Island Sound.

They met us for Isabelle's All-Star game against the Westport All Stars at Meyer Field. I met Elizabeth and Jeff Lillien who live in Westport. They brought dinner from KFC to the baseball field. Nancy and I stopped by Elizabeth's home that was built in 1936 of stone from the area. Elizabeth is a Kappa Kappa Gamma that Nancy met at their meetings. Jen Spring with Anna and Matthew from Newport, Rhode Island came to spend the night on their way to camp in Ohio. On Friday, Hannah met Meghan Tuttle and Faith Grabraz at 4:00 to go to the movie "Hairspray" at the New Canaan Playhouse Theater. After the movie and dinner, at the Taste of Asia, they were getting in line at 8:30 p.m. in costume to get their reserved copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at 12:01 (midnight). They were first in line with their cooler, chairs, and flashlights. Hannah dressed like Hermione Granger, Meghan as Luna Lovegood and Faith as Professor Trelawn. The books were just $34.99 and the deluxe were around $45. There were some guys in line that wanted the girl's first place, and they asked some trivia questions about the previous books and Hannah answered all of them. Isabelle and her friend Elizabeth O'Sullivan were in line with Hannah after Isabelle's softball game. Michael had ordered two copies of the book and they were delivered on Friday. Isabelle started reading her copy of the book but had to pack for camp. Hannah came home at 1 a.m. and read the 759 pages in eleven hours. Michael started reading his copy of the book in the car on the ride to take the kids to camp. Just a fun fact: J. K. Rowling is only 41-years- old and is richer than the Queen of England. She has written seven books and they have made five movies of the Harry Potter series. On Saturday morning, George and Ernest practiced George's fishing ability casting at the Yacht club. Michael went for his instructional lesson on sailing. Nancy and I went to see the doctor about my nose. We took Queenie the Saint Bernard dog to the boarding kennel. We marked Isabelle's camp clothes and packed them in her trunk. We marked George's clothes and packed his trunk.

We left at 4:00 p.m. from New Canaan for All Tucked Inn B&B in Westport, New York and took NY I 87 all the way to Westport. The countryside much like East Texas with hardwood trees and evergreens and became hilly as we drove to Lake Champlain with "Nellie" the navigator telling us each turn. We arrived at the B&B to our rooms on the third floor with 30 steps to climb outside in the back of the house at 8:30 p.m. and went to the Galley Restaurant at the Marina for dinner. Ernest and Hannah did a jitterbug along with Nancy and Michael. Sarah was embarrassed and would not look at them. On Sunday, we went to The Inn Café for breakfast and walked down to Westport Marina. Michael rented a motorboat for Monday from 1 to 5.

We rode on the ferry from Essex to Charlotte, Vermont and stopped at the Vermont Teddy Bear Company in Burlington, VT. The four children picked a bear to be stuffed and put four hearts in it. They named it "Giggles". We drove down town Burlington and ate at 3:00 at the Breakwater Cafe & Grill on the banks of Lake Champlain. At 4:00 Mango Jam played Zydeco music. After the children went to the Aquarium on the lake, we had our picture made with "Champ" the Lake Champlain monster. Since we did not get breakfast with our room, we stopped at Shaw's Grocery and bought breakfast food. Michael equaled the All Tucked Inn to the 'Terrific' Meriffic Hotel where we stayed in Paris that was a 3 star hotel. The joke is the hotel in Paris was terrible. We took the 20 minute ferry ride back across the lake to Westport, NY. It was about 7:30 p.m., and the sun set over the mountains was spectacular. Ernest said that we had a wonderful afternoon with no plan.

On Monday, we went to the Olympic Center in Lake Placid. It was about an hour drive. Nancy drove and Ernest navigated and Michael kept reading Harry Potter. We saw birch, aspen, pine, maple, and spruce trees in the Adirondack Mountains. The town was crowded with people at a horse show and people leaving from the Iron Man Triathlon competition on Sunday that had closed all of the sights in town. We were able to tour the Museum and to see the two ice arenas. The 1932 ice arena is named for Jack Shea the double gold medallist in speed skating that was from Lake Placid. Sonja Henie videos showed how she made figure skating famous with her short dresses. Seventeen nations and 348 athletes attended the III Winter Olympiad in Lake Placid. Sonja Henie is the only woman to ever win five Olympic medals for figure skating. The population of the town in 1932 was 2,930. In the 1980 Olympics, Lake Placid had 200 less population and faced obstacles for the XIII Olympic Winter Games. The famous 1980 ice arena named for Herb Brooks was where the USA Ice Hockey Team showed the world that they could be the Miracle team and defeat the Soviet Union ice hockey team. This sports moment is viewed as the turning point in the Cold War. Eric Heiden skated to a record of 5 gold medals. In the 1980 rink, they had a hockey school in progress. In the 1932 rink were girls practicing their figure skating moves. Ernest called them "wannabees".

We sat in a bobsled, and the children were in the simulation of a bobsled, down hill ski racing, luge, hockey goalie and ski jumping. The museum had all of the Olympic torches from all the different games. Mascots from each Olympic were on display. Uniforms worn by the 1932 and 1980 athletes showed how times and clothes have changed. We missed the gondola ride, Adirondack Scenic Railroad and watching the ski jump practices into the swimming pool because we had to get back to the Lake Champlain for our motorboat afternoon. I will finish next week with our twelve-day adventure with our Herde family.

Catch you around town. Janice Ann email:
