William "James" Johns, 79, of Diboll, was born August 23, 1927, in Emporia, Texas, the son of the late Minnie Irene (Moore) and James Alexander Johns. He passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2007, in a local hospital.
Mr. Johns was retired from Trinity Portland Cement in Houston, where he was employed as a chemist. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was always happy and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, and always looked forward to his long drives with his grandsons. Mr. Johns proudly served his country in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was a member and Deacon of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Allene Johns of Diboll; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Ray and Evelyn Johns of Diboll; grandsons, Thomas Ray Johns, Jr. of Diboll, Matt A. Johns of Beaumont, Peter A. "PJ" Johns of San Antonio and Andrew A. Johns of Dallas; granddaughter, Angie Autry of Atascocita; 5 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other family members. Mr. Johns was preceded in death by his son, Hollis Glenn Johns; six brothers and one sister. Pallbearers will be Thomas R. Johns, Jr., Matt A. Johns, Peter A. "PJ" Johns, Andrew A. Johns, Jack Albonetti, Jr. and Nelson Brimer. Services for Mr. Johns will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2007, in the Hillcrest Baptist Church, with Bro. Horace Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Ryan Chapel Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home. Gipson Funeral Home; Joni Johnson, director.
