ELMER DUREN

Oct. 28, 1919 - Aug. 16, 2007

Funeral services for Elmer W. Duren, 87 of Lufkin were held Sunday, August 19, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dee Black officiating. Interment followed in the Sims (Rocky Hill) cemetery.

Mr. Duren was born October 28, 1919 in Robeline, Louisiana to the late Ellen (Clark) and Will Duren and died Thursday, August 16, 2007 in the Arbor Section of Pinecrest Retirement Community. Mr. Duren had resided in Lufkin for the last 62 years. After 38 years of service he retired as Power Plant Day Foreman from Champion International. A 12-year veteran of the United States Navy, he served in WWII and the Korean War and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Proud to be a sailor, he loved to share his naval experiences with anyone who would listen. Mr. Duren was a member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church. He was dedicated to the Word of God, and memorized a favorite verse of scripture from each book of the Bible. At a young age, he identified the principles and character that were to be the goals of his life.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Joseph DiStefano and Susan and Robert Henderson all of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Leslie Duren of Lufkin; grandchildren and spouses, Denise and Bryan Davis, Kurt and Kimberly Stringer, Bryan Duren, Arron Henderson and Brad Henderson; great-grandchildren, Donovan Stringer, Molly Davis and Zoe Davis; sister-in-law, Virginia Duren of St. Helens, OR.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clayton and Helen Duren of Huntington, David and Delores Duren of Lufkin and James and Betty Duren of Marbury, AL. and sister-in-law, Nell Terry of Lufkin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Dorothy Duren in 2004; brother, Elbert Duren and son-in-law, Don Stringer. Pallbearers will be Larry Felts, Dave Duren, Larry Bailey, Earl Ellington, Claude Williams and Gerald Sanders.
