While the 'boys of summer' are still wielding their bats in the chase for a World Series title and the 'little boys of summer' from Lubbock continue their quest for a Little League World Series championship, the 'boys from Diboll' have donned their fall attire in preparation for a winning football season.
Traveling to Sour Lake on Saturday for a preseason scrimmage against the squads of Hardin-Jefferson, (district 21-AAA) the Lumberjack varsity team began that trek with a 6-touchdown blitz spearheaded by Diboll quarterbacks Kyle Prescott and Jacoby Spencer.
Prescott, who connected on 7-of-10 passes, found receivers Cutler Ruby for an 11-yard chain-mover and a 39-yard beauty to J. J. Hayes.
Spencer was also able to move the ball well and completed six of 10 passes for 66-yards, one, a 2-yard strike to Trey Loche for a touchdown. Spencer also had 103 yards rushing on seven carries, one going in for pay dirt.
Head coach Gary Martle, who was pleased with his team's Saturday performance, said he saw some very positive things on both sides of the ball. "I was confident our running game would do well, and I was pleased to see success in the passing game as well. The defense held Hardin-Jefferson to minus10-yards in total offense and only four first downs."
Senior running back Ketaraus Stanton, in his usual form, rushing for 96 yards and a touchdown on only four carries, one of which was for 45-yards. Also lending their running abilities to the day were Kendal Jackson who had 32 yards rushing on five carries and Cornelius Polk who added 15 yards on two carries, including an 8-yard TD run.
Although Hayes was top receiver for the day, adding to the air attack was Alex Castillo who had two catches for 26 yards, Nick Cortines hauled in a 24-yard reception, Josh Odom had one catch for 17 yards, Vidal Rios had one 9-yard reception and Polk added another 7 yards on one reception.
