Lumberjacks make 2007 debut Friday

Diboll travels to Shepherd for season opener

For the second time in as many weeks, the Diboll Lumberjacks took on a state-ranked team and, despite a 3-2 touchdown loss, proved they will be a team to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.

The Lumberjacks have faced a 10th ranked Kirbyville team, and this past Friday night, the Lumberjacks took on fifth-ranked Newton.

Jacoby Spencer passed for 105 yards on the night and found Cornelius Polk on two occasions for 56 yards, and Alex Castillo for three receptions for 53 yards.

Head Coach Gary Martel says his teams played well against the Eagles. "Our Jacks did very well against the always strong team from Newton. The junior varsity and ninth squads tied the Eagles 5-5 in touchdowns and the varsity, who gave up three touchdowns, scored on two occasions. We played a lot of our juniors and sophomores and I really am pleased with how they responded. We held out two varsity players who have some bumps and bruises and some of our people really stepped it up in those places."

Running back Ketarus Stanton sat out this scrimmage but Kamron McCollum and Kendall Jackson had a good showing for the 'Jacks. McCollum finished with 37 yards on seven carries, and Jackson had 26 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Newton built a two-touchdown lead in the controlled portion of the scrimmage before Diboll got on the board with a Jaime Palacio 48-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Jackson tied the game on a two-yard touchdown before the teams started the live portion of the scrimmage.

Newton scored on a 50-yard interception for the final score. Diboll threatened to tie the game later but fumbled near the Newton goal line.

"We had a great practice on Monday evening and I look for our teams to play well this week as we open the season. The 9th grade and junior varsity play at 5 and 7 p.m. on Thursday at home. The varsity Lumberjacks will kick off the season on Sept. 7 at Shepherd." Martel said.

Shepherd is located on Hwy. 59 south of Goodrich and is approximately a one hour drive.
