Diboll routs Shepherd 45-12

DYNAMITE DEFENSE - Diboll's defense contains a Shepherd runner during a 45-12 win over the Pirates in week 1 of the 2007 season. Johnathan Coleman, 56, and Caleb Cauley, 22, along with a host of other Lumberjacks stopped the drive and limited Shepherd's advances to the goal line.

The Diboll Lumberjacks of 2007 unveiled a potent offense, when they scored in every quarter to rout the Shepherd Pirates, 45-12.

In their opener on the road, Diboll's head coach Gary Martel's Lumberjacks ripped the Pirates defense with 388 yards of offense, passing and rushing, led by junior quarterback Jacolby Spencer with 145 yards passing and three T.D.'s.

Spencer, who was forced to sit out the 2006 season with a broken arm sustained against Shepherd in a 47-46 loss, led the 'Jacks to an early lead against the Pirates. Diboll took the opening kickoff and marched 88-yards down the field in 9 plays with Spencer capping the drive on a 15-yard touchown pass to wide receiver Alex Castillo. Castillo's P.A.T. kick was wide.

On their next possession, Spencer hooked up with tight end Cutler Ruby on a beautiful 31 yard TD toss. The extra point attempt was no good. After one quarter, Diboll led 12-0.

In the second quarter, Diboll's premier senior running back, Ketaraus Stanton, 103 yards rushing on 12 carries, blasted over from 5 yards out to cap a 20 yard, 6 play drive. Stanton took up where he left off last season, when he rushed for 1,116 yards and 14 T.D.'s. Castillo kicked the P.A.T. to put the Jacks up 19-0.

Just before the half, Spencer threw his third T.D. pass of the night, when he launched a 50 yard missle to J.J. Hayes. Stanton ran in the two point conversion.

After intermission, the 'Jacks continued to pound the Pirate's defense when Kamran McCollum finished a 70-yard, eight- play drive with a 10-yard TD run. Spencer threw to Cornelius Polk for the 2-point conversion.

In the last quarter, Diboll scored two more times, one on a 32 yard field goal by Castillo and on a 14 yard TD run by Kendal Jackson. Castillo's kick for the point was good.

The Pirates were able to get on the board near the end of the first half when, quarterback Jessie Butler connected with tight end Clint Riddle on a 12 yard T.D. pass. Early in the third-quarter, running back Chaz Caddie scored from 6 yards out to close the gap to 27-12. But that was all the Diboll defense would allow the rest of the night, with the DHS offense tacking on three more tallies.

On defense, Antonio Johnson led the way with two quarterback sacks while Cody Stifle hauled in a pass interception and Raphael Villanueva recovered a fumble. Other defensive standouts were J.R. Youngblood and Kyle Prescott.

The win puts Diboll at 1-0 on the season while Shepherd falls to 0-2.

Diboll's home opener will be this Friday at Lumberjack Stadium when they host Cleveland at 7:30p.m. Back the Jacks! See you at the game.
