The 23rd annual Texas State forest Festival will get underway this afternoon at the George H. Henderson Jr. Exposition Center in Lufkin. More than 30,000 people attend each year because this is an event that offers fun for the entire family.
The festival kicks off with First Bank and Trust East Texas and KTRE-TV9 night at 5 p.m. this evening. A special exhibition by the All American Lumberjack Show will take place at 5:30 p.m. Then, stick around as dance teams from all over East Texas compete in the GAP Broadcasting Pom Pon/Dance Teams Competition at 7 p.m. Carnival armbands will be $2 off just by bringing three canned goods.
Thursday night is sponsored by Lufkin Coca-Cola and Yates Broadcasting and will include a Family Music Fest on the main stage. Carnival armband discounts will also be available Thursday.
Get ready for babies and karaoke, as you won't want to miss the Pregnancy Help Center Baby Derby and Karaoke with Todd Rogers, brought to you by Friday night sponsors Brookshire Brothers and KJ-103. Brookshire Brothers will also give away Dreyer's ice cream to the first 3,000 people through the gate.
On Saturday, the annual Brookshire Brothers/Hytop Southern Hushpuppy Championships will be held. You'll be above to smell hot, delicious, crispy hushpuppies for miles around as contestants from all over Texas compete for the bragging rights to the most scrumptious hushpuppy creation in the Pineywoods of East Texas.
Also on Saturday, teams from all over compete for the honor of East Texas Cheerleading Champion.
A pet parade will also be held Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Pets and owners are judged on the most unique, cutest, and best costume. At 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the Angelina College Singers will perform, plus other local entertainment will be featured on Sunday.
Other events include Loblolly Texas-Old Mill Town, Kachunga and the Alligator Show and the Tall Timbers District Belt Loop Bonanza Scout Fair.
There are plenty of activities for the children including a carnival, petting zoo, swine races, pony rides and much, more.
Gates open at 5 p.m. each eveing, 9 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 each day and children under three get in free.
