Sheila's Potpourri - News from Huntington

BY Sheila Scogin

Correspondent

Garvis Brookshire Baldree is always such a friendly person and I was happy to see her after several years. She stays busy after retiring from Diboll ISD. Her mother Ora Brookshire taught second grade for years in Huntington and was surely a wonderful inspiration for all who were in her classes. Mrs. Brookshire taught when teachers were respected and never caused a scandal. Garvis said that her grandchildren were all in school so she works with the homebound students which keep her busy.

The former Sylvia Dominey is attending college and I was very happy to visit with her. She and Randy graduated together so he is always happy to have news of his classmates.

Talk about folks having bad luck but Lulla and Bob Adams do just that it seems when they venture off to Colorado. They were to baby-sit Ella and get Cade and Cole to school while their mom Karla worked and dad Chris Carroll made a trip to Houston and returned to Colorado Springs by way of business in Arkansas.

To back this story up to a previous visit, Lulla's van had been parked on the street and the neighbor across from the Carroll house had backed into the van damaging it.

One evening Lulla, Bob and the three little ones were inside when they heard popping noises. Stunned and trying to decide what the noise was, it was too late by then to garage Lula's new van during a terrible hail storm. The van wasn't even thought of while they hurriedly got the children and themselves safely away from the windows.

Sharon Turney was muttering at the beauty shop about having had one of those hectic and non-productive mornings. She had worked through lunch and also run some errands. Wanda Tunnell and I assured her we all have those days and weeks but Sharon understood the older she gets, the calmer her life is supposed to be. That brought the house down and we told her she had been misinformed! Zula Harris sanctioned our statement.

Bertie Walker changed days to get prettied up but I ran into her as she was leaving the grocery store. People were shopping but I recognized none other than those who work in the store. More and more men shop nowadays but I'm not sure if they are unattached men or have a working wife or their better half is not able to shop due to health problems. Many times older men will be doing the grocery buying and I can tell they are quite new at that chore. I ask what they are looking for when that desperate frown is noticed. I realize they are folks who have gotten older from when we were growing up.

Friends I have seen out and about were Billy Gerald Clark who started first grade with me; Ralph and Garleatha Adams Nerren, Polly White, long ago neighbor Ed and Judy McGaughey Snelson, Robert and Jeannette Duren Jones, Sue Kirkland and her only child Dale, Dorothy Roberts, Scott Morehead and his dad Boots, cousin Josh Russell and Helen Page.

When I see Ray Smith, he makes me laugh with his witty remarks.

Bill Clark said his better half Linda had been in Seattle visiting their daughter. Brandi.

Bruno Barry made me laugh when we were talking about people smoking and he said he smoked when he was much younger. Mr. Bruno had to give the cigarettes up when they got so expensive and cost 3O cents a pack. That was a long time ago.
