Paul and Tamesha Root, Louise Lindsey went to Lubbock to attend a banquet planned by Abby Root for 100 people as part of her school project at Texas Tech University where she is a Hotel & Restaurant Management major. Joann (Lindsey) and Brian Pruitt of Amarillo joined them. Paul returned to Lufkin and Louise and Tamesha went to visit the Pruitts in Amarillo. From there, Louise will go to Virginia to attend the christening of great-granddaughter Lauren Jane Lawson, daughter of Michael and Robin Lawson. Robin is the daughter of Oscar and Nancy Lindsey Beaird. Louise hand stitched the christening dress.

The Brittain Clan was together on July 4 and Labor Day at Louise Lindsey's. The younger generations always enjoy the pool.

Ann and Kent Richardson traveled 2,475 miles and only got lost once--took one block sooner than should have--drove only ten miles out of the way!! What a record for them! They stopped at Lake Bardwell, a Corps of Engineer Lake, near Waxahachie. From there they pulled into Copper Breaks State Park in Quanah, TX to stretch their legs and look for birds They hiked down the hill located a short distance from their site and did not see any birds to mention. The next night they stayed in a private RV park in Dalhart, TX, arriving there a little later than anticipated because they just had to stop at the huge Tourist Information Center in Amarillo. Of course, they loaded up with all sorts of brochures covering all the interesting places in Texas, which they say every year, "Let's visit all the places in Texas first!" From there, they went to Eagle Nest, NM. arriving in mid afternoon and Kent stretched out on the couch, while Ann visited with the owners of the RV park; and after all the chit-chat, she assumed that they felt compelled to invite them to their "grilling" as they referred to the activity which was grilled beef ribs with all the trimmings plus ice cream and crumb cake. Ann asked them if it was Blue Bell--and their comment: "...of course!" Saw a pretty Mountain Blue Bird here. They did enjoy the Santa Fe Trail while in the mountains. The Santa Fe Trail sites and landmarks include Clayton, Springer, Raton, Cimarron, Las Vegas and Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Trail was a major route for the U.S. Troops when the United States declared war against New Mexico back in 1846. Then it was on to Lake Cochita (a Corps Lake located on the Rio Grande) in the Cochita Indian Reservation about 20/25 miles south of Santa Fe. They toured the "Old Town Square," in Santa Fe, taking in the marvelous shops featuring fantastic sculptures - huge figures of Indian deer hunters, eagles, elk, buffalo, were bronze figures as tall as ten feet. They saw the Loretto Chapel (a Gothic chapel with the miraculous staircase supposedly built by a mysterious carpenter believed by Loretto nuns to be St. Joseph). Of course, they ate Mexican food at a neat street side cafe, waiting almost 20 minutes to be seated - so many people! Descending south, still in NM, they arrived at "The Valley of The Fires Recreation Area" in Carrizozo. This place is filled with extinct lava flows and great nature trails. The campground is located high on a hillside. No bird sightings of any significance though. Spent the night in a nice private RV park in Van Horn, TX. Good Ol' Texas! Kent saw a Marsh Wren and Pyrrhuloxia. Ann did not get to see them. On to Big Bend with all sorts of anticipation of seeing lots of rare and exotic birds! Paid for two nights at the Big Bend Rio Grande Village RV Park and was surely going to wade the Rio Grande! Much to their dismay, the only exotic animals they encountered were a few Javelinas! They did meet some nice people from Switzerland with whom they chatted for half an hour. The Rio Grande was rushing its muddy waters to the tune of the Ol' Mighty Mississippi! So forget wading across to Mexico! Evidently, there had been some recent rains in the Big Bend area. Ann said it would be a "cold day in August" before she makes the sixth trip to Big Bend. The next stop was Pecan Valley RV Park in Junction, TX, which was not their choice, but it being a Friday, the South Llano River State Park was full. They cooled their heels and Kent set out a minnow trap. He was going to fish the Llano River the next morning. No fish! Nothing! So, he unplugged the rig and they left for Lake Somerville. Ann had navigated them through Dripping Springs, bypassing Austin--yeah, right! She did not know that Dripping Springs had been taken in by Austin and is now Austin Springs! Getting through the metropolis of Austin, they ended up about a quarter of a mile high on a spaghetti highway that had five or six spaghetti highways interwoven to and fro below them and they made it, but without any fingernails! Lake Somerville (another beautiful Corps lake) was their next stop. They stayed at Rocky Creek Park on the lake that has a great beach for the entire family to enjoy. They brought out the lawn chairs and watched families boating, jet-skiing, tubing, swimming and having great fun. What a way to end a great trip being gone for 12 days. She said: "FYI--don't know if you and Ernest are familiar with any of the Corps of Engineer lakes or not, but they are some of our favorite RV campgrounds. Of course, we are birders and they and the state parks are more tuned to birding than the private RV parks. I have picked up a lot of brochures over the years on the Corps Lakes throughout the United States. Will be happy to share them with you guys. Have all the info on state parks too."

Dixie and Joe Brittain's five-year-old twin granddaughters Katherine and Hannah Chinn had Dixie confused as who was who while on a shopping trip for school clothes. The twins' mom, Ruth Chinn, dresses them alike except different colors. While trying on clothes, they decided to change shirts. They giggled when Dixie thought she was talking to Katherine and it was Hannah. Ruth told her what they had done.

Pat Brown enjoyed Grandparents Day and lunch at Peavy Primary, Hudson with Ethan who is in the first grade. Pat gets Ethan from school on Tuesday and Thursdays. He was excited about scoring two goals in his soccer game at Kit McConnico Park. Pat "Granna" Brown says it sure gets hot sitting in the sun. Mattie Bell Shands was also at the game to see great grandsons Hayden Simpson and Jackson Parks. They are the sons of Michael and Kayla Simpson and Emily and Chad Parks and grand sons of Susan and Darin Simpson.

Kathy Thannisch broke her ankle. She will have to give you the details. She has a purple cast with gold panther paws on it.

"Sister" Henderson is helping at The Very Thing from now to Christmas for Nancy Winston. Sister went to New York City to help her sister Holly Henderson, move into a new apartment in Brooklyn and get settled. Sister is the organized one in the family. Holly is dating a guy who works for "60 Minutes", Keith Sharmen. He did the segment on the Chess Player from Russia. Holly will display her photos at the Museum of East Texas in January.

Abeldt's Gaslight Pharmacy opened October 1 on Gaslight Blvd. Buford and Melissa Abeldt and their employees are excited about the new location.

Dee McDaniel went on an Adventure Trip for eight days and traveled 2,700 miles. She had her car checked and had her cell phone and lap top computer. Her first stop was Caprock Canyon State Park. She hiked in Palo Duro Canyon State Park and went on to Las Vegas, New Mexico, Santa Fe, and to Durango, Colorado where she rode the train to Silverton and took the bus back to Durango. Red River, Eagle Nest, Taos were stops that she made along the way staying in KOA Campgrounds. She was out of her comfort zone but confident to go again. Glen wanted information on a cooler climate vacation for the summer and Dee was on a 'scouting' trip. She met many friends along the trip and was invited to church in Red River and a potluck dinner. Dee emailed about her trip back home and those enjoyed "being with her" from her descriptions.

The LHS Theatre Department's production of "Dearly Departed" had us all laughing. Patsy Hines and I sat with Jule Fenley, Mary Jule and Joseph Tatum. Anne Fenley was the only person that I knew in the cast, and for me she "stole the show" with her performance of Suzanne. Marianna Duncan, Dr. Sid and Catherine Roberts with Phoebe sat in front of us. Their daughter Hannah had the part of Lucille. The others did a super job in their parts. I saw Kathy and Ron Yeager who were there to see Meagan. Deborah Garrett was selling tickets and told me that they had about 200 on Thursday night. The Lufkin Middle School auditorium has padded seats and the sound was wonderful. The remodeling was worth it. The theater department will present "Hello, Dolly!" on November 29 and 30. Mark you calendar.

Hunters on the move were Taylor Haney and Clint Webb pulling the Haney travel trailer to the hunting lease north of Snyder. Terry Haney and my Ernest kept calling poor Taylor along the way. They were expecting something to go wrong but it did not. I have seen deer stands, four wheelers and hunting vehicles on trailers. The "widow" hunting season is about to start.

Catch you around town.
