It is unusual for me to be escorted into the grocery store but E.B. Berry did just that when we arrived at the same time. We barely got inside when along came Carl Havard. I do believe he continues to get skinnier. He had been helping his son. Tom Havard work some cows and had gotten too hot. That is easy to do in the evening. They chose a hot and nasty job but somebody has to do it.
Neighbor Dorothy Hamilton was in the post office when I was and she has been walking since the mornings have been pleasant.
It seems impossible that Melba May Duran and I have been best friends for nearly 60 years. There is no counting the number of hours we have spent together; never enough as far as we were concerned. So when her mother Minnie Morgan passed away this week, I felt as though one of my own kin was gone. Melba and I were together when Minnie gave birth to James Morgan and a few years later his sister Louise Morgan. Melba and I learned how to take care of babies with them and even though Minnie was a stay at home mom during their early life there was still lots of work for us girls to help with. We already knew how to work either at her house or mine. If you wanted to eat, then you helped with all the chores. We never got to spend enough time together and each minute we managed alone was fantastic. We had to laugh, talk and tell secrets which to this day have not been breathed to another human. I suspect we will go to our graves with just such secrets simply because we are getting old and have forgotten those precious moments. We thought they were so important but evidently they were so trivial they slipped through the mesh of our brain.
Minnie belonged to Denman Avenue Church most all the years of our friendship and she was devoted. Not just sitting back to let others work in the church but she was very active in what went on at the church.
Needless to say folks came to show respect and love for her and as usual it was a reunion of those still living. When she was married to Dossie Morgan and she and Melba lived on what is now FM Road 2109 below us and Elvin and Margie Morgan and his twin brother Alvin and Helen Morgan lived between us and them. I was happy to see Margie, her daughters Linda and Marilyn and their cousins Kenneth, Donald and Jerry Morgan and their sister Jeannette and her husband Charles Hudnall. Charles and I reminisced about his grandpa Lamar Hudnall. Lamar was a funny man and was always laughing; he did enjoy a good "42" game..
Melba's cousins Ray and Martha Carswell were showing off granddaughters Emma and Abby Carswell. Emma is not bashful at all and both are cute as can be: Dr Amy Halyard Ross shared her smiling young daughter Macy with me. She is a doll and tried so hard to talk when I told her that I once held her mommy. Amy's sister Ashley is as beautiful and the girls have proud parents in Morty and Louise Morgan Halyard.
Visited with Janie Hines who is Melba's cousin and is married to one of my classmates Buck Hines and with them was their son Bobby. Buck and I were happy to see Billy Jerald Clark who was in school all the years we were. Lola Shofner Hanchey and her sister Jean Walters were visiting long time acquaintances. Lola and I go for months without seeing each other and then twice in a week have the pleasure of a quick visit.
Melanie is Minnie's fourth child and is married to Mike Stubblefield; they have sons Dorey and Duane Stubblefield. Dr. David and Debra Duran Palmer have Hunter who is 13 and already taller than I and six year old Haley. Monica Duran Little has Lyndsey Little who is in 10th grade and taller than I. How kids grow up is beyond me. One day they are babies and poof. the next thing I know they are about ready to graduate.
Beamon found Ed and Linda Mount to visit with and Ed had worked with Jack Duran and Beamon years ago at Texas Foundries. It seemed odd to see Kathy Braden away from her bookkeeping business; she and Melba have been at the beauty shop many years together.
Due to people being so busy nowadays, visitations or funerals have become the place to see old friends and that is really sad.
