Lumberjacks demolish Liberty to remain unbeaten

THE EXPRESS ROLLS - Diboll's Cody Stifle (85) and Kyle Prescott (12) leads the way for Kendal Jackson (31) as they head downfield against Liberty. The Lumberjacks will be on the road this Friday night as they travel to Splendora to face the Wildcats in their final pre-distrist game.

Diboll takes 4-0 record to Splendora for final pre-district game

BY JOE MIRANDA - Lumberjack correspondent

Under a beautiful full moon in Liberty, the Lumberjacks methodically demolished the Panthers in a 52-19 rout to extend their season record to 4-0, something the 'Jacks haven't experienced since the 2000 season.

The Lumberjack Express rolled again; led by their engineer, quarterback Jacolby Spencer. Spencer was 9 for 12 attempts through the air for 220 yards and three TD's.

Once again the Jacks offensive engine was manned by Diboll's all-purpose back, Ketaraus Stanton. Stanton added another 100-plus yard game to his already massive season figure for total yardage with two more rushing TD's and, to make him more of a threat to the opponents, threw a 69-yard bomb to Alex Castillo for his first TD pass of the year. Stanton had 109 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Following the opening kickoff, the Panthers struck quickly and in less than two minutes, moved the ball 80 yards in three plays for the first score on the night. The PAT attempt sailed wide right.

The Lumberjacks wasted little time in coming back, with a 5-play, 69-yard drive to take over the lead for good after, Stanton dashed in from 11 yards out. Castillo (Mr. Automatic) drilled the first of his seven extra points and later in the game; he would add a 41-yard field goal to his total. After three minutes of play the Jacks jumped out to a 7-6 lead.

Following the Panther's three and out, the Jacks would score again on a 5-play, 56 yard drive culminated by Spencer's 4-yard run into the end zone. Castillo's kick was good.

On the Panther's next possession they punted to Diboll's 31-yard line. It took 12 seconds for the Jacks to score again when Stanton launched a 69-yard TD pass to Castillo. Castillo added the point. At the end of the first quarter, Diboll led 21-6.

Early in the second quarter Liberty recovered a fumble on the Jacks 40 yard line. Running back Josh White capped off a 5-play drive with a 17-yard burst up the middle. Jose Lazo kicked the extra point to cut the lead to eight points.

The Jacks would score three more times before the half. Spencer threw three TD passes, one to Cornelius Polk for 46 yards, another to Nick Cortines for 10 yards, and another to J.J. Hayes for 21. Cortines, scoring his first TD reception of the season, was the sixth different player Spencer connected with on the night.

At the half the Lumberjacks held a commanding 42-13 lead.

The second half began with the Jacks lined up on Liberty's 49. Eight plays and five minutes later, Stanton finished off the drive with a three-yard TD run. Castillo added the point.

Following a Cody Stifle interception of a Panther pass, Castillo kicked his 41-yard field goal.

The Panthers tallied one more time when White scored his second TD on a 2-yard run. The try for a two- point conversion was no good and the 'Jacks came away with the 52-19 win.

On defense the Jacks had a good game. Ryan Whitworth and Polk had sacks and Stifle with an interception. J.R. Youngblood, Sammy Haywood, and Kendal Jackson also had good games.

Head Coach Gary Martel said, "I feel we are continuing to improve at all levels from the 7th grade on up. We cannot, however, become complacent and must continue to coach the little details that make teams great. I am pleased with our progress so far this season."

The Lumberjacks will be on the road again this Friday night as they take on Splendora (2-2) at Wildcat Stadium. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Support the Jacks! See you at the game.
