All Around Lufkin by Janice Ann Rowe

Bettie Powell, after 46 years as a hair stylist, is retiring and her last days will be October 24, 25 and 26 if you want to say goodbye to her. Shelly Hollis, Joelene Alsbrooks, and Cheri McKinney at the Final Touch (1103 Pershing) hate to see Bettie retire but are happy to welcome Amber Dugat who will be working Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. Bettie's first job was for Nettie B. Bivin at the Blue Bonnet Beauty shop. She remembered that hair cuts were $1.50 and a shampoo and set was $2.

In her retirement she plans to spend more time with her mother Mrs. R. B. Davis, Sr., and sisters who have been ill. She also plans to start up the electric business, Stream Energy by Ignite. Her grandchildren Rilee and Shelby Miller, daughters of Shaye and Darell, will be seeing more of her at their soccer games and Grand Friends Day. Bettie will be traveling with the Home Town Travelers Club and many other ventures that will keep her busy. Kay Gunn and Mabelyne McKnight are sad to see Bettie retire. I have lost my beauty operator and am sad for myself but happy for Bettie.

Nancy Hopkins Reily will introduce her latest book "Georgia O'Keeffe, A Private Friendship, Part I, Walking the Sun Prairie Land" at the Kurth Memorial Library on Thursday, November 1 at 11:45 a.m. Nancy was a family friend of Georgia O'Keeffe and has spent 10 years researching Georgia's early years walking as closely as she could, where Georgia O'Keeffe walked in her youth and defining years. The public is invited to come hear Nancy share her story and personal snippets from her life with Georgia as well as to enjoy the beauty of her artwork on display. Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author. This event is co hosted by Friends of the Kurth Memorial Library and the First Street Arts Center. A percentage of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to Kurth Memorial Library.

The First Street Arts Center will celebrate their one-year anniversary on Saturday, October 27 from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. There will be live music and refreshments.

Kae and Steve Richert are the proud grandparents of Benjamin Baird Richert born September 27 to Blair and Alex Richert. The Richert's other son Andrew is in Iraq for his second tour. He left on the day that the new baby arrived. Andrew is a 1st Lt. in the Marines.

Tamesha and Paul Root, Louise Lindsey, Lindsey Root, Joann Pruitt, Sarah and Hal Levine all attended Abby Root's TTU Senior Dinner Series in Lubbock. The "Dinner Series" is what the Sr. Restaurant, Hotel & Institution Management (RHIM) majors have to plan, organize, and implement for their final "swan song." Hers was an Italian themed 5 course dinner for 100 people. Texas Tech owns a "teaching restaurant, Skyview," on the 6th floor of the Bank of America Bldg. This is where the students take classes for restaurant management, actually learning how a real restaurant operates. It was quite an event, and Abby has earned an A in the class based on her (& her partner's) successful evening! Tamesha said "they did an outstanding job planning the menu, managing the staff (of other student plus the real executive chef), decorating and advertising their evening!" Paul and Tamesha helped them string hundreds of white mini-lights across the ceiling of the restaurant for the effect that they wanted...what a chore! But the rewards of a fantastic evening and wonderful meal made the trip more than worthwhile.

Patsy and Tommy Hines were in Fredericksburg for their Oktoberfest. Their hosts were Tamesha Jumper and Bill Vernon. Some of you laugh when I mention the food places that we visit but when you get our age, food is what you enjoy. The group ate lunch at Hondo's Restaurant for "fast-German-food" on Friday night and went to the Festival on Saturday at the Marktplatz. They enjoyed the Czech Dancers from West and the Band-Aids (a band of doctors) that play at the festival. Sunday lunch was at Altdorf's Biergarten on Main Street.

Halloween birthdays: Ruth Denman, Marie Stubblefield, and Rebecca West.

Happy Anniversary: Larry and Patricia Gunter, Pauline and Joe Grisham, Lisa and John Villarreal.

Sharon McClure, C. H. McClure, Rick and Selena Watkins are the proud grandparents of Brayden Watkins born October 15 to Ashley and Wade Watkins. Brayden weighted 7 lbs and 3 oz and was 20 inches long.

Barbara Barge, Denise and Roger Davis went to Austin to see new baby James Roger Davis III who they will call Hamish. He is the son of Jay and Kim Davis and was born October 8 in Austin. Hamish is Barbara's first great-grand child.

Patti Smithhart hosted a Sip and See for Harris Claude Mann, son of JaneAnn and John Mann of Bellaire. Harris is also the grandson of Paul and Peggy Draper and great- grandparents are Marcelle and G. W. Woods of San Augustine. Marcelle was at the Sip and See as were other great-great aunts Jane Sublett and Sue Burk. Penny and Micah Burk, cousins, came from Dallas for the party. I got to hold the pretty "hunk" Harris who is three-months-old. He is precious and went from person to person. Daddy, John Mann, was in for the weekend to hunt with Claude Smithhart at Pine Island Hunting Club.

Shelley Brophy, owner of Farechild's Restaurant in Nacogdoches, had her opening on October 23. Jorge Ramos is the executive chef at the 1411 North Street location. The restaurant is classic American Dining. Telephone is 936-569-1411.

Cathy and Lynn Pavlic vacationed in Wyoming with friends, Lisa and Richard Warner. While there, they enjoyed fly fishing.

Karla Yates, Karen Watson, Karen Gibbs, and Donna Busler went for Karla's birthday on the Royal Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Key West, Cozmuel and Cococay. She snorkeled and enjoyed the food on the ship. Mr. Moms taking care of the family while the girls were away were Stephen Yates, Van Watson, Greg Gibbs and Brad Busler. I hear that they all did a super job.

Enjoying the Alley Theatre production of "Arsenic and Old Lace" staring Dixie Carter were: Angela O'Herron, Karen Parrett, Barbara Miller and Carolyn Beavers. Carolyn says that it is still playing and very good.

The Texas Forestry Museum's TREEmendous Celebration for the 6th year will be on Thursday, November 1 at the Lufkin Civic Center. Dinner will be by Outback Steakhouse. Tickets are $50 per person. Contact the Museum at 632-9535 for reservations.

Pat and Jim Massingill have pretty fall decorations at their front door on Evans Street.

Miss Anna Claire Hay made her "social debut" at the age of four days. She, along with Oma Barb, Papa Tom Flournoy, parents, Kyle and Kristen Hay, siblings Caleb, Morgan, and Scarlett, and paternal grandparents, Scott and LaNell Hay of Yorktown, TX, surprised Grammy Jane Durham (Barb's mom) for her 86th birthday, with a giant cake, a huge pot of mums for her patio, and their "presence" for lunch at Pinecrest on Grammy's big day, October 3. Grammy said that she was so shocked that if she were the fainting type, she would have surely fainted. She thought we were all too busy with the new baby and would be celebrating later!!! The Pinecrest folk greatly enjoyed seeing newborn Anna Claire and her brothers and sister.

Sarah Atkinson, daughter of Claire Van Den Berg of Dallas, Eric and Darlene Atkinson, married Wanderly Ramirez, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francisco Ramirez, at the First Presbyterian Church. The reception, which was a seated dinner, was at Crown Colony Country Club. The ring bearer, Beau Atkinson brother of the bride, had a humorous side when he presented the groom with a ring that blinked red instead of the real rings. Grandparents Dr. Basil and Frances Atkinson were there to share the moment. Ernest had to tell Claire that we called her "Puddy" which was her nickname in high school. She laughed and said that she remembered those days when she graduated in 1979. Ice sculptures done by Jorge Ramos were on several tables at Crown Colony. It was a festive night. Ronnie Cook had his radio and kept us posted on the Panther football score. Doug Ashburn said that on the PackTron everything was sponsored and he wanted to sponsor the penalties. He was just joking Sideliners. During half time I heard Stephen Yates wish his wife Karla Yates "happy birthday".

Ernest and Oscar Dillahunty attended the Keltys Reunion at Lynn Fisher's Kurth Home on Old Mill Road. Some that they knew were: Gloria Ogden, Peggy Langford, John Henry and Jo Ann Tatum, Theo Johnson, Ray and Jean Jayroe, Billy Lewing, Nell Stevenson, Pat Edwards, Don Dickerson and his granddaughter, Rose Ann Harbuck, and Buddy Beavers. Howard Daniel was the "man" in charge.

Martha and Ray Carswell were at The Woodlands over the weekend, and Martha called Woodie Hicks for updates on the Panthers score against Conroe Oak Ridge. Martha and Ray attended the First Christian Church at The Woodlands and heard Curtis Keith who is their interim minister.

Virginia Winston enjoys keeping her great-grand daughters, Alex, who is 2, and Clara, who is 4 months. They are the daughters of Lacey and Clay Keath. She was the chauffeur for Eddie McFarland who wanted to attend Sarah Atkinson's wedding. Eddie celebrated his 83rd birthday on October 15.

Karla Yates had her ears pierced for her 50th birthday and 15-year-old Amy Yates and 10-year-old Abby had theirs pierced at the same time. So now all three Yates girls have pierced ears.

Jody and Jimmy Tinkle's son Jay Olson is in a group called "Porch Praise" that play instruments that you might find on or near the porch of a house and are played by family, friends or passersby who want to join in and just sing that day away. They are at the Flint United Methodist Church and Jay plays the banjo and the 26 inch saw using a violin bow and holding the end of the saw between his knees. It gives a vibrato that sends a sound like an electric guitar. Jay taught my Kappa Picker Sorority girls, Julie and Nancy, to play the saw when they were in the group of Pickers at Texas A&M. Jay said that he is the only one around these parts that plays the saw.

Nancy and Thomas Moore went to San Antonio for Nancy's 50th class reunion from Thomas Jefferson High School. There were over 200 that attended from her class of 500. Friday night they ate at the Botanical Garden and Saturday they toured the high school that was build in 1930. In 1937 it was the most outstanding school in the United States with its Spanish Moorish style for 2,000 students. Lunch on Saturday was at Jacala's Restaurant. Dinner Saturday night was off 410 Loop at Los Patios a Spanish Colonial Estate that is a restaurant. It is secluded and hard to find. Nancy recommends all of these eating places.

Theresa Williamson was making her mom Audrey Kubec and Billie Cardwell beautiful.

Catch you around town.
