Angelina College music instructor and guitarist Larry Greer performs special Classical/Jazz faculty recital at the Angelina Center for the Arts' Temple Theater.
Official ribbon cutting ceremony for Stephen F. Austin State University's newest residence hall, Lumberjack Village, commences. The $34 million facility will house almost 600 students and includes indoor and outdoor recreation center, convenience store, study lounges and community kitchen.
Linda Schultz Heberling is featured speaker at the Angelina County Historical Commission meeting and details the life of Sam Schultz, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native who became a resident of Angelina County, served in World War II and how he lived out the rest of his life.
Diboll High School's girls cross country team of Amanda Drake, Lina Davis, Isabel Luna, Liz Castillo, Jazmin Robles and Maria Olvera qualify for competition at the regional meet in Huntsville by winning third place in the district meet held in Hudson.
Angelina College Lady Runners basketball team opens their pre-season with a scrimmage against the Houston Jaguars, a traveling exhibition team featuring several formal college players. Houston reels off an 11-1 run over the final three minutes to take the simulated game 74-64.
Diboll Lumberjacks football team wins sixth straight as they devastate the Huntington Red Devils 54-6.
FIVE YEARS AGO
Hudson ISD trustees approve the appointment of Art Nelson as a member of the Hudson school board. Nelson replaces former board member Jack Matthews who resigned for health reasons.
Angelina County commissioners give approval to new boat ramp to be constructed at Plum Ridge (the eastern-most tip of Angelina County) at Lake Sam Rayburn.
Angelina College offers internet registration for students enrolled during the fall semester.
This year's Lufkin High School Drug-Free All-Stars are Keelan Lewis, Brittnee Purvis, Mitzi Stanberry, Brian Smith, Lexie Eppley, Valerie Villasana, Megan Rorick, Karla Kadlec, Tyler Alverson, Macy Freeman, Miranda Greene, Tara Bickley, Ashley Henson, Tiffany Self, Ashley Holloway, Katie Wojasinski, Katie Tankersley, Beth Billingsley, Callie Copenhaver and Jennifer Baker.
A majority of membership in three Lufkin Industries unions accepts new three-year contract by the company. The deal brings the strike to a close at the Lufkin facility.

Angelina County 4-H Team cooks win third place in the annual Hushpuppy Cook-Off sponsored by the Texas Forest Festival. Team members include Miranda Whitten, Katie Nicholson, Stephanie Love, Holly Weems, Laura Paul, Mistin Johnson, Jason Whitten and Keith Dailey.
The Angelina County Chamber of Commerce announce placement of Meredith Hopkins as the Manager of the Lufkin Convention & Visitor Bureau.
Inducted in the Diboll Lumberjack Hall of Fame are former Lumberjack receiver, coach and Principal Bobby Baker; former coach and administrator James Porter; Ladyjack track standout Shelly Castillo and Sylvia Mitchell; and former grid standouts Danny Baker, Richard Warner, Lynn Pavlic and John Ralph Pouland.
Members of the 1997-98 Diboll High School Varsity volleyball team are Misty Jones, Lindsay Vanover, Casey Yates, Jessica DeJesus, Kiana Scott, Andrea Mark, Andrea Reyes, Jessica Rayborn, Cassi Lenderman, Laci Roden, Michelle Miller and Coach Pam Matlock.
Angelina County students collectively miss more than 13,000 days of school the first six weeks of the school year. The absences cost the county school $300,000.

Cheering for Diboll Temple Junior High School Littlejacks this season are Marla McGaughey, Katherine (K.K.) Ledford, Stacy Smith, Nikki Capps, April Crump, Monica Smith, Donna Teal, Karen Furgurson, Shanda Sigers and Jennifer Murphy.
Ellen C. Temple Publishing Company of Austin reprint 3000 more copies of the best selling novel "The Train To Estelle" by Jane Roberts Wood. The novel has been on the bestseller list in Dallas for the last 22 weeks.
Temple-Eastex's Fiber Products Operation October Employee of the Month is machinist Raymond Bounds. Bounds has been with the company for 15 years.
U.S. Army Private Pearlie Green of Huntington graduates from the U.S. Army Signal Center's single channel radio operator course at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
Diboll Garden Club members don Halloween attire at their regular monthly meeting. Members include Jean Rowe, Peggy Burt, Sophie Lenderman, Billie Oates, Oneta Hendrick, Judy Gartman, Virginia Nelson, Linda Cook, Dee Hodsden, Teena Kellam, Louise Maxwell, Edythe Weeks, Fran McClain, Beth Denman, Cathy Martz and Barbara Sample.
The Lumberjack Band's flag corps adds zip and zest to the halftime marching performance. Members include Captain Melinda Linton, Tracey Maxey, Deborah Hannah, Staci Covington, Leticia Reyes, Melissa Baxter and Chantea Hinton.
Over 700 people participate in the third annual Charlie Wilson Senior Citizen '42' Tournament held at the Lufkin Civic Center. The team of Anna Blaha and Greg Fitzgerald of Palestine comes away with first place.

Mrs. Cowart's first grade class at Huntington makes goblins, witches and haunted houses in preparation for the big Huntington PTA Halloween Carnival. Class members include Keesha Jacks, Tray Modisette, Derrick Brousard, Kim Barkley, Chauntel Moore, Mary Denman, Burnley Suggs, Kirby Vardenman, Jamie McQuilkin, Lisa Ross, James Herrington, Jennifer Redden, Michael Whitehead, Randy Moody and teacher Mrs. Cowart.
The Waymakers and the Little Flock Gospel Singers perform in concert at the Burke Big B Jamboree auditorium.
The Free Press in Diboll celebrates 25th silver anniversary. It all began in October of 1952 as The Diboll News-Bulletin.

Pat and Lavada Patrick will open the Acapulco Inn Restaurant in Diboll as soon as remodeling is finished. This is the former Country Manor Restaurant in north Diboll.
The Patricks will operate the Acapulco Inn with Spanish décor and will serve only Mexican food.
