ONE YEAR AGO

T.L.L.Temple Memorial Library plans major expansion and renovation of its facilities, set to begin in 2007. The $2 million dollar project will add 7,123 square feet of space to the building, doubling its current size.

The Diboll High School Marching Band under the supervision of Band Director Joseph Acker brings home first division rating during the University Interscholastic League Region 21 Marching Contest held in Longview.

Diboll Police Association hosts fundraising fish fry to benefit the upcoming Christmas toy drive and other youth oriented activities in the Diboll community.

Diboll third grader Edgar Padilla wins first place in the Cattle Dog Futurity Coloring Contest and receives new bike and $50 saving bond for his winning efforts from Diboll Elementary School Principal Lisa Jeffrey.

The Diboll Ladyjack freshman volleyball team captures the 20-3A District title. The ladies end the season with 7-1 district record and 25-3 overall record. Team members include Kayla Martel, Amanda Jordan, Monica Moreno, Shanice Deason, Chelsea Burns, Yasmine Hulett, Lauren Dubose, Casey Carrell, Frankie Bogany, Hilary White, Crystal Spencer, Ieshia Sessions, Ashley Williams, Meredith Ruby, Ashley Wilson, Miranda Hannah, Emily Ives, Ruby Hernandez and Coach Merdith Shaw.

Angelina County Chamber of Commerce names Abney & Sons Hardware of Lufkin 2002 Small Business of the Year.

Democrat Lynn George wins Pct. 4 position as he downs Republican opponent Warren (Wes) Suiter.

The Hudson ISD board of trustees approves the bid of School Specialty, Inc. to provide furniture for the school district's new W.H. Bonner Elementary.

Award winning Elvis impersonator James Wages performs at Cavender's Boot & Western Ware Store's grand opening sale. Appearing with Elvis is Professional Bull Riders Donny Gay, Cody Hancock and Mike White.

Lufkin Panthers make two second-quarter touchdowns stand up in a 15-0 victory over the John Tyler Lions at Rose Stadium in Tyler.

Diboll Lumberjacks playoff hopes hits snag with 25-22 loss to the Kirbyville Wildcats.

Diboll ISD board of trustees recognizes Special Olympians for their achievements in Special Olympics by awarding Diboll High School letter jackets. Shown sporting their new jackets at the meeting are Fernando DeLaCruz, Jeffery Mosley, Jessica Mosley and Matthew Mosley. DISD Superintendent Bobby Bakes states that this is the first time for Diboll to award letter jackets in Special Olympics.

Angelina County United Way Campaign exceeds 1997 goal of $635,000 with 25% increase totaling $791,555.

Tom Farley, long-time booster of Diboll's school and youth baseball is chosen Diboll Pilot Club Citizen of the Month.

Abby Anthony, 12-year-old daughter of Ray and Teresa Anthony, represent Texas in the National Pre-Teen Princess Program in Orlando, Florida.

Geoffrey the Giraffe from Toys 'R' Us visits Diboll Primary School students as part of Red Ribbon Week.

Newly elected officers of Hudson High School are Kellie Campbell, president; Robin Lambing, vice president; Tiona Jordon, secretary; and Keisha Tolbert, treasurer.

Temple's Engineered Lumber Operation in Diboll completes three years without lost time accident. TWENTY YEARS AGO

John Copeland is honored at surprise testimonial dinner at Ryan Chapel Methodist Church for his 52 years of faithful service as music director.

Jo Thompson of Lufkin, the current Miss Texas, is a hit at style show fundraiser for the Department of Home Economic at Stephen F. Austin State University. A senior at SFA, Miss Texas makes her return to campus since representing Texas in the Miss America Pageant this summer.

Jimmy Cassels of Lufkin is the lucky winner of a .270 Weatherby rifle/scope given away by the Diboll Rotary Club.

First Baptist Church of Diboll wins the Open League Softball Championship in Lufkin by defeating the Desperados 16-12. First Baptist team members include John Cheatham, Kent Havard, Ricky Conner, Bobby Baker, Clay Dubose, Tom Williams, Doug Loafman, Randy Murry, Buster Grigg, Jay Wyatt, Cooper Farris, Elmer Kimbrough, Terry Conerly, Kelly Parker, Gregg Mullins, Scott Havard and Jerry Jenkins.

Jubilant Lumberjack fans witness history as Diboll and Center combine 105 points in a 66-49 football game that may never be repeated in Lumberjack Stadium.

Varsity cheerleaders at Diboll High School this years are Christi Dear, Pam Havard, Leanene Garr, Diane Adkison, Katrina Teal, Kay Celestine, Kim Havard and Kerry Smith.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Sam Glass, Diboll Parks Superintendent, is honored with the Diboll Rotary Club's Vocational Service Award at its regular meeting.

Federal Judge William Wayne Justice in Tyler rules in favor of the Zavalla School District in a case involving non-renewal of teacher's contract. Judge Justice's ruling upholds the school board's decision, which had been pending 16 months.

Members of the Junior Girl Scout Troop in Huntington are Debbie Phillips, Tifini Whiddon, Jannah Walters, Tabatha Gilcrease, Billie Whitehead, Tammy Fancher, Kathy Crawford, Debra Jacks, Lisa Powers, Cathy Cross, Johnna Golden, Tina Dominey, Laura Whitehead, Vicki Mott, Michele Townsend and Traci Horton.

Students at Diboll Elementary School take part in the Presidential Physical Fitness Program tests. This is the first time for such participation in the kindergarten through fourth grade level.

The Diboll Lumberjacks goes deeper in the District 17-3A holes as San Augustine Wolves blank the Jacks by 30-0 count. The loss keeps the Jacks 0-5 in district play.

The Little Ladyjacks at Temple Junior School wins second place at own volleyball tournament. Team members include Cathy Scarborough, Melissa Fairchild, Nola Fasske, Connie Allen, Nancy Wells, Pam McCartney, Sandra Teal, Sonya Walker, Michelle Hall, Natalie Johnson, Sharon Breazeale, Lisa Williams, Dessia Fowler, Dianna Bane and Coach Charyl Palsha.
