All Around Lufkin by Janice Ann Rowe

I had an email that said do not accept the gold dollar coins because they do not have "In God We Trust" on them. I took the three, Washington, Jefferson and Adams, to my grandchildren and they noticed that the "In God We Trust" is on the rim of the coin. Sure enough, I looked and it is there. So do not pass that email around about not accepting the gold coins.

Jo Ann Hobbs has pictures of her new great grand baby, Bryn Jones, daughter of Bethany and Casey Jones. She was born in Houston and had some complications but is gaining and should be back in Lufkin in about a month.

I bought a pork roast from the Panther Baseball Boosters. Doug Russell and John Tatum were cooking them. I bought mine from Diamond Doll Amy Yates. Wish that I had known earlier and could have given them some publicity. This is my third year to get one, and this year I got it frozen so I could use it later in the holidays.

Ernie and Barbara Rowe had a party to introduce her daughter Chassity Laird's fiancé Jacob Armstrong's parents to family and friends. Jacob is working in West Virginia but his parents, Jeff and Kristine Armstrong, are from near Bastrop. Chassity attends college at Texas State University in San Marcos. Jacob's brother and sister were there, Nate and Sarah Armstrong. Others at the party were: Chassity's sister Brittany and Josh Lowery from Granbury, Mark and Crystal Smith, Steve and Dena Cox, and Sanjuana Carrizeles. The wedding will be August 16 in Livingston at the Central Baptist Church with the reception and rehearsal dinner at Chain O Lakes Resort.

Topping the list of Thanksgiving blessings for Dr. Tom and Donna Willis is their first grandchild, Adam Joshua Willis, born on October 24th to Amy and David Willis. A.J. (as he will be called) weighed exactly 7 pounds, and was 18 1/2 inches long. Also present when his daddy brought him to be seen through the nursery window were his Aunt Cindy Willis from Tyler, maternal grandparents Mary and Bozy Adams from Garrison, great-grandmother Elsie Willis, a resident at Pinecrest Retirement Center, and good friends, Jim and Barbara Haley. Donna's dad, Norman Baker, is a Healthcare resident at Pinecrest, and looks forward to meeting A.J. in the near future.

Patsy Hines and I had lunch at MarTeres Tea Room. We visited with Barb Flournoy and daughters Kristen Hay with Anna Claire and Nicole Ellis with Adeline. The bigger grandchildren, Preston, Chandler and Hudson Ellis, Caleb, Morgan and Scarlett Hay were with Papa Tom Flournoy and Kyle Hay having a picnic while the "ladies" had lunch. Oma and Papa had a bonfire and cook out later and the four oldest boys went "camping out" with Oma (Barb) on the newly enclosed back porch. Oma reported that she had maybe one hour of sleep. The next morning they made French toast and tree shaped cookies for Oma's Christmas tree, a family tradition.

The Lufkin Rotary Waffle Bake will be November 28 and 29 (Wednesday and Thursday) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Angelina College Cafeteria. Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door. There will be entertainment nightly.

Lisa Griffin was at the post office checking on the Fred Griffin's mail.

Mark your calendar for the Lufkin High School's presentation of "Hello, Dolly!" at the Middle School Auditorium on Thursday and Friday, November 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. Cay Billingsley is the director; musical direction by Michael Tyre; Choreography by Lisa Griffin; accompanists, David Lawson, Brian and Bryce Harkness, and Clark Lewing and technical advisor Lee Miller. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Dolly Gallagher is played by Alycia Bowling; Ernestina by Shelby Portwood; Ambrose Kemper by Aaron Krise; Horance Vandergelder by Ethan Fatheree; Ermengarde by Sierra Page; Cornellius Hackl by Blake Brown, Barnaby Tucker by Robbie Nash; Minnie Fay by Hannah Roberts; Irene Malloy by Anne Fenley; Mrs. Rose by Christina Hannan; Rudolph Reisenweber by Edward Saenz; Stanley by Nyna Know, First Cook by Luiza Wood, Second cook by Turza Wood; judge by Derek Grimes and Court Clerk by Jonathan Clos. They have rented costumes so it should be a big production. I am anxious to see what they will do. Hope that you all will support this effort by the fine arts department.

The Lufkin Dance Club is hosting a Catered Dinner and Christmas Dance Friday, December 7 from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge, 197 Hughes Road. The dancing will be to Glenn Lenderman's music. Tickets are $15 in advance only. Contact Bernard Hylands at 936-632-4878.

Harmony Hill Baptist Church recently had a bridal shower for Shelley Koch, daughter of John and Laura Koch, bride elect of Chance Riehl. The wedding is New Year's Eve in Temple.

John Lee and Pat Slaughter went in their motor home to Santa Fe, New Mexico in October. They stayed in Las Vegas, NM since it was the Balloon Fest in Albuquerque. They enjoyed shopping, good food and the beautiful Aspen gold leaves along the circle through Angel Fire, where they saw the Vietnam Memorial on the mountain, and back into Taos. They have had the motor home since May and made a short trip to Atlanta to visit John Lee's sisters.

Mary Jane and Rebecca West, Tonja Childers and Emily Hampton won tickets through Southwest Securities in their private box to see entertainer Josh Turner at the Texas Stampede Rodeo at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Joan and Bill Poplin told me that Mark Condron was married to their daughter Lee Ann Poplin and Tiffani Brantner is their granddaughter. They were featured in the Sunday Lufkin Daily News running in the Army Ten-Miler race in Washington D.C. These married names sometimes escape me but Mark and Tiffani plan to run in the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot in Houston. The others running will be Jeff Brantner, Lee Ann, and Clint Haygood. We will watch and see how they do. Joan and Bill went to see Clint, who is a senior, play basketball for the Hudson Hornets.

Susan Brown and daughter Amanda have been visiting Geneva and Harold Newsom. Amanda has the prettiest curly hair.

Charlotte Warren and sisters, Linda Clark and Marilyn Batton and their mother Ellen Cook all of Jacksonville and friend Kay James spent nine days touring in October. They stopped in Vicksburg over night and then it was on to Scottsborough, Alabama to the Unclaimed Luggage Center. They reported that it was a rip off and the prices were not good and the things were "junk". They saw it advertised on the TV travel channel and thought it might be fun. From there they went to Asheville, North Carolina and drove through Maggie Valley, which was at its peak with the spectacular leaves. Then they toured the Biltmore Estate and ate at the Carriage House. Charleston, South Carolina was their next stop where they went on a tour and saw where Katie Couric bought her shoes, Bruce Willis' home, and Fort Sumter. They toured the aircraft carrier Yorktown and had a blast. They all got sick on the simulator of Desert Storm and the Polar Icecap. At Hilton Head, NC, she said it was fancy and they went to the beach. Then in Savannah, Georgia they saw spots from the Tom Cruise movies, Whistle Stop Café and ate some fried green tomatoes, saw the house in "Garden of Good and Evil" movie, and Tom Hanks' bench in Forrest Gump. They stayed two blocks from Paula Deen's Restaurant and ate there but liked Pirates Place better and the food was just as good and not as long a wait. They shipped back a ham and pralines for their brother and wife, Butch and Lana Cook, who told them that the weather was going to be bad the night that they had chosen to stay in a tent. Charlotte tells a funny story about the "tent night". I did not know that Charlotte had a twin brother and it is Butch. Another brother Weldon Cook travels and knows places for them to see.

Sarah Stevens catered the appetizers, chicken, beef and deserts. The auction items were good and the crowd had a good time. We will have to report what they made toward the half million-dollar project for Bronaugh Park, downtown next to the City Hall. They plan a Lance Hunter Mural, a 125-seat amphitheater, and improvements that will make this a meeting center for downtown.

I learned that Barbara Richert, a new artist in town, is opening her art gallery in Moore Building Associates on East Shepherd Avenue. Her website is: www.artstudio201.com. Welcome to Lufkin.

Paul Parker is on crutches due to a freak accident that he will have to tell you about. There were several stories going around at the party.

JonAnna and Glen Arnold are the proud parents of Addyson Ann Arnold born on November 14. Addyson weighed 7 lbs 15 oz and is 20 1/2 inches long. Her big 7-year-old sister is Kimberlin and her big 4-year-old brother is Charlie. Of course she has blonde hair and blue eyes. Grand parents are JoAnn and Charles Arnold, Suzanne and Jesse Bradford. Great grandparents are Marion Bradford and Veta Barr, J.C. and Louise Arnold of Texarkana.

Diana Morrow is home at last. We will keep checking on her progress.

I stopped by the open house at Maricela's Forgotten Treasures Antiques Mall and saw items in booths that belonged to Cindy Taylor, Cyndi Kullback, Effie Stemple, Carol Beckham, and Laura Koch. The food was good and I signed up for many door prizes.

Stanley and Carolyn New went to the induction ceremony for new members of the State Bar of Texas where their son Eliot was sworn in as a licensed attorney at the Oath ceremony in Austin conducted by the Supreme Court of Texas Justices. Aunt Tamesha Jumper was there to see the swearing in of Eliot.

I was not ready for football season to be over but it is. We are proud of our Panthers and they will be back next year. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Catch you around town. Janice Ann email: roweja@suddenlink.ne
