THIRTY YEARS AGO THIS MONTH Photo Courtesy of The History Center New office of Dr. D.A. Karpen, D.O. has passed the halfway mark. The ten-sided building, a decagon, is being constructed by L. Richardson & Son of Lufkin. The round building contains about 2400 square feet and the decagon geometrical shape is said by Dr. Karpen to be mmore efficient in energy savings and also saves walking time. The exterior will be brick. The practicing D.O here will be Dr. C.H. Cathcart, an associate of Dr. Karpen, and a second doctor will be added if needed. The clinic is one of several belonging to East Texas Family Medical Clinics & Associates. The clinic is located just off Saxton Street and South Temple Drive. They are shooting for February 15 as a completion date.

Diboll ISD bands performs Christmas concert at the Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center.

Retiring City of Diboll Parks and Recreation Department employee Preston Hook receives service award for his 19 years of service to the city.

Twins Eule and Ellie Mann celebrate their fifth birthday. Sending birthday wishes are parents Chuck and Lisa Mann; grandparents Charlie and Nettie Mann and Paul and Bea Suarez.

Diboll City Council approve 3-year contract with Nestor Traffic Systems for feasibility study and implementation of laser-based red light camera enforcement system at all three major intersections in downtown Diboll.

Former Diboll football Coach Jeff Stifle is honored by collegues, athletes and friends for his years of service at Diboll High School and to the Diboll Lumberjacks at the 2006 Diboll High School Fall Sports Banquet.

Former students, faculty and administrative personnel, family and friends gather at Diboll Junior High School Library for dedication of new education building named in honor of longtime high school principal Robert Ramsey.

FIVE YEARS AGO

Rosemary Swetland, local music instructor, releases new CD, "He Restoreth My Soul," the first of a series of therapeutic music. Bridge replacement on three county roads in the Diboll, Beulah and Zavalla areas are put on hold until county officials wait for clarification on the 1930's era law on the books that apply to their rural construction projects.

This year's Diboll Pilot Club Tree of Lights Program is dedicated to the memory of Marion Parr, the club's charter president.

Winner of the December Beautification Award from Angelina Beautiful/Clean is Katherine Kelli's Upscale Resale Shop located on Denman Avenue in Lufkin.

Diboll High School Interact Club collects over 5,000 canned items that are given to Diboll Christian Outreach and Buckner Family Place in Lufkin.

Brady Franks is named Diboll Rotary Student of the Month for December.

Jonathan Hale of the Lufkin Panthers nail 29-yard field goal with five seconds remaining to lift Lufkin past Longview 24-21 and capture the regional title in Class 5A football action. The Pack advances to play Southlake Carroll High School.

TEN YEARS AGO

County singer Flint Thompson visits career classes at Diboll Junior High School.

16-year Diboll city employee Donald Burleson is selected City of Diboll Employee of the Week. Burleson is city parks foreman.

With Christmas approaching, Ellen Trout Zoo officials announce the arrival of two special visitors for the holiday season-a pair of reindeer named Donner and Prancer.

Carpenter's Way Baptist Church in Lufkin presents musical drama, "A Time for Christmas." More than 150 are part of the production under the direction of Joe Glass, associate pastor for worship.

LaGrange Leopards knock Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs out of state Class 3A regional playoffs with 20-14 win.

Apple Springs Lady Eagles top Gary Lady Bobcats 39-27 in local basketball action. Scoring for the Eagles are Susan Tullos with 10-points, Jessica Smith and Heather Pyle with 8 each, Jennifer Baker with 7- points, Rashion Freeman shoots five points and Joanna Wells shoots free throw for 1-point.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Diboll Temple Junior High fifth grade students Melissa Ferguson and Kimberly Shivers are selected Co-Students of the Month. Vice Principal Bobby Baker treats each to a meal as part of their reward.

Hudson Elementary School wins first place in the non-commercial division for floatas in the annual Christmas parade through downtown Lufkin. About 120 entries participate in the parade.

Mrs. Rosemary Swetland of Burke conducts her 21st annual Christmas piano recital at the Burke United Methodist Church. Performing in the beginners class are Jane Shepherd, Jessica and Rebecca Hannabas, Paul Mettlen, Kevin Tolly, Miriam Reppond and Jenni Williams.

Construction workers are putting finishing touches to the interior of the new Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center in preparation for a "checklist" inspection next week.

Former Diboll High School graduate Connie Maddox Dubose graduates from Texas Wesleyan Harris Hospital Graduate School of Nurse Anesthesia in Fort Worth.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Diboll senior citizens form musical group, the Diboll Rhythm Swingers. Band members include Effie Mae Allen, LaReine Anderson, Nannie Breazeale, Mae Bridwell, Thelma Courtney, Malissie Davis, Ruth Engle, Ruby Hales, Rosa Harris, Iva Hodges, Sarah Kerr, Edna Mathis, Bessie Petty, Sarah Powell, Pearl Ramsey, Katie Schmidt, Josephine Smith, Mary Speer, Estelle Sunderland, Lillie Vaughn, Annie Ward, Maurine Weimer, Elizabeth Weisinger, Eunice Whitman and Flora Womack.

Mr. and Mrs. A.L. (Fate and Thama) Anderson celebrate 50th wedding anniversary with open house reception hosted by their children and grandchildren.

U.S. Marine Corps Private First Class Archie D. Levias completes Marine Recruit Training at San Diego, California. Levias is a 1977 graduate of Diboll High School.

R.E. (Sally) Hunter, owner of Angelina Chevrolet-Cadillac in Lufkin, is honored by the Cadillac Motor Division of General Motors for more than 25 years of continuous service as a Cadillac automobile dealer. Hunter sold his first Cadillac in 1941 and his first Chevrolet in 1931.
