Jacks whip both Tarkington and stats

The difference maker in Friday's varsity win over Tarkenton was this: 70 vs. 38. The Lumberjacks attempted 70 field goals while Tarkington put up only 38.

If final scores were based on percentages, Diboll would have come up short, hitting just under 45 percent of its field goals while Tarkington scored on over 60 percent. But the Jacks simply kept Tarkington from getting shots.

Cornelius Polk led the Jacks with 24 points but the biggest number of the night might have been JJ Hayes' 17 rebounds. Hayes also finished with 17 points and three assists.

Tarkington hit exactly one third of their three 3-pointers. By comparison, the Jacks hit on 40 percent of theirs but they put up ten. From the free throw line Diboll was 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) and Tarkingtron was 23-of-34 (67.6 percent).

The score was tied at 35 at the end of the first quarter and, in one of those flukish events that besets high school basketball, neither team scored a point in the second. Diboll outplayed Tarkington 24-to-17 in the third quarter and held on 18-19 in the fourth to claim the non-district win.
