Rudolph: Red-nosed reindeer, phenomenon You know Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Vixon, Comet, Cupid, Donder, and Blitzen. But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all? The Montgomery Ward Company, the Chicago-based retail operator, had purchased and distributed children's coloring books as Christmas gifts for their customers for several years. In 1939, Robert L. May a 34- year old copywriter for Montgomery Ward, wrote the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and 2.4 million copies were handed out that year. Despite the wartime, when paper was at a premium, over 6 million copies were distributed by 1946. May's inspiration to create the story of the misfit reindeer was "The Ugly Duckling" as well as his own childhood experiences as an often picked-on, small, fragile boy. The copyright was turned over to May in January 1947. May's story "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was printed commercially in 1947 and, a year later, a nine-minute cartoon of the story was shown in theaters. When May's brotherin law, songwriter Johnny Marks, wrote the lyrics and melody for the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", the Rudolph phenomenon was born. That is why we ask that you be very careful when you are on our complex during the building renovation. Please stay on the sidewalks and pavement as the grassy areas have large holes left from the removal of the trees. Also be very watchful of any construction that may be going on. We do not know the exact time frame but within the next couple of weeks the old Archives/Technology Building and the back walkway will be gone or in the process of being taken down. When this happens, then the north parking lot will no longer be available for patrons to park in. You will then have to park in the south lot only unless otherwise directed. Please feel free to call us before you come and ask any questions you might have - 829-5497. Also for those who have need of the handicap lift, when the north side is closed off, this access will no longer be available. You will need to call us at 829- 5497 so we can look for you. The staff will have to come out to your vehicle and get your material for you. We will then get the materials you need, check them out for you and return them to you outside - curbside service! Again we apologize for any inconvenience to you in any way, but remember the outcome will be well worth the temporary inconvenience.
