Employees, friends and patrons of the T.L.L. Temple Memorial Library in Diboll witness the ground-breaking ceremony for the upcoming, multi-million dollar expansion project of the facility.

Larry Bowman retires as director of the Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center in Diboll. Following eight years as director of the center for the city of Diboll, Bowman shares the occasion with family, friends and co-workers at a reception, hosted by the city.

Members of the Diboll Pilot Club gathered together to collect food items for the Diboll Christian Outreach Center. The Outreach volunteers and Pilot Club members involved with the collection include Johnnie Devereaux, Vivian Holt, Becky Donahoe, Billie Jean Capps, Kathy Rodgers, Milford Ruby, Vernon Burkhalter, Rev. Jackie Snarr, Rev. Michael Jordan, Bobby Hambrick and Billie Robinson.

The Diboll Lumberjack baseball squad closes out their season and upped their District 20-3A standing at 7-7 with a 5-2 win over the Central Bulldogs. This marks the final outing for seniors Carlos Moreno, Kylan Herchman, Alvara Robles and Philip Hopkins.

FIVE YEARS AGO

St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lufkin hosts annual Spring Festival and also commemorates the 75th anniversary of the parish in Lufkin. The celebration and festival takes place at the Expo Center.

The Blue Grass Festival in Nacogdoches honors long-time radio personality Bill Crow for his over 40 years in radio.

Rocio Alonso, 4th grader at Lufkin Slack Elementary School is named 2003 Southeast Texas Regional winner of the Texas Arbor Day Poster Contest. Alonso's poster theme is "Trees are terrific from acorn to oak."

Diboll Lady Jacks bounce Teague Lady Lions to take first ever bi-district win and will face Caldwell for the area championship.

TEN YEARS AGO

Diane Fulton, fourth-grade teacher at Anderson Elementary School in Lufkin is named 1998 Angelina County Teacher of the Year.

The Burke Water Supply Corporation's board of directors asks members to consider doing away with the corporation and vote to turn over operations of the city water supply system to the City of Lufkin.

Angelina County commissioners vote to purchase tract of land near the confluence of Lufkin Avenue, Shady Pine Street and Loop 287 for $317,141 for new jail site.

Hudson and Zavalla elections yield new mayors for city: Robert Smith is elected new mayor of Hudson and Hulon Miller will be the new mayor of Zavalla.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Hudson ISD receives $25,000 from the T.L.L. Temple Foundation to assist in equipping the district's new media center.

Top graduates at Diboll High School this year are Leslie Kilgore (91.30), Tessie Austin (92.50), Melinda Linton (94.71), salutatorian Elizabeth Ingram (97.38) and valedictorian James Hodsden (98.43).

U.S. Representative Charles Wilson introduces legislation outlining a proposal for multinational contributions toward the rebuilding of Afghanistan.

Karen Dunn, a junior forward from Lufkin, is selected captain of the 1988-89 Lady Knights (United States Military Academy) basketball team.

U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Anita Alltop of Lufkin completes the Non-Commissioned Officer Leadership Course at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs Zusle Rush of Burke celebrate 70th wedding anniversary with a family get together and dinner at the Burke School House.

Five students from Diboll Elementary School that are finalists in the Easter Seal Book-AThon are honored during special school assembly. The students are Tracie Adkison, Jerrod Grumbles, Joe Gage, Tim Brooks and Julie Bozeman.

The board of directors of Temple-Eastex and Olinkraft approve the purchase of Olinkraft's particleboard mill at Monroeville, Alabama.

Burke Boosters host gospel music show at the Old Burke School featuring The Little Flock Singers, The Bell Family and The Good News Singers.
