Conneticut yankee was Republic's Renaissance Man
      The Republic senate overlooked the fact Dr. Ashbel Smith had been in Texas only a month and on Jun. 12, 1837 confirmed the appointment of the Conncticut Yankee as surgeon general. Smith's biographer listed his achievements as "scholar, linguist, diplomat, soldier, statesman, scientist, physician, editor, writer, farmer, rancher, philosopher, educator and humanitarian.
