Major Phillip Gage completes year-long training program in the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Gage is a 1990 graduate of Diboll High School and 1994 graduate of Texas A & M University.
Ladies Retreat is held at Pine Grove Baptist Church near Diboll by the Tzedakah Ministries, a church-focused ministry designed to equip Christians and churches and in the area of Jewish evangelism.
Receiving All-District 20-3A (first team) honors for the Diboll Lady Jacks softball team are Chelsea Waters, outfield and Tracey Morado, utility; (second team) Monica Mettlen, utility; (honorable mention) Hope Lakey.
Angelina College's Frank Corolla is selected for the National Junior College Athletic Association freshman All-Star game. The fire balling relief pitcher has 1.78 ERA.
Lance Moore, born and raised in Burke community, is named new director of the Lottie & Arthur Temple Civic Center in Diboll.

Diboll High School Lumberjack golfer Matthew Oates places second at the Houston Golf Association Junior Tournament.
The American Forest & Paper Association award its 2003 Forest Management Award to Temple-Inland for the company's Conservation Forest Program.
Pollok Central ISD board of trustees approve the development of an aquaculture facility on the district's newly acquired property just north of the main campus.
Paul Hinton retires as executive director/general program chairman of East Texas "Get Hooked on Fishing." Hinton has served 17 years as head of the youth anti-drug/alcohol program.
Huntington's Centennial Park boast new brick sign at its main entrance. The sigh is unveiled during Huntington Heritage Festival activities.
Recipients from East Texas receiving Lufkin Industries Foundation Scholarships include Noelia Rios (Diboll), Teran Matthews, Michael De- Vries (Huntington) (Huntington), Melissa Sanford (Zavalla), Stacey Weathers (Pollok Central), Krystal Elliott (Jasper), Katie Clark (Woden), Tikiya Johnson, Kenneth Johnson (Nacogdoches), Bo Massey (SFASU), John Shaw (Groveton), Jamie Whitaker (Rusk), Dianna Luman (Hudson) and David Jordan (home schooled).
TEN YEARS AGO
Diboll's Betty Powell receives distinguished honor of being selected "Woman of the Year" from the professional organization of the Angelina Business and Professional Women's Club.
Diboll Police arrest three adults and two juveniles at scent of riot at the Diboll Housing Authority.
Wayne Nerren, Pollok Central ISD Administrator retires after 37 years of service. Nerren served as teacher, coach and administration in those 37 years.
Major Paul and Linda White, directors of the Salvation Army in Lufkin the past eight years, transfer to new mission is San Angelo, Texas.
Susan Combs, Republican for state agriculture commissioner, campaigns in Diboll with visit to Temple-Inland's Applied Research Center in the Temple-Inland Build Products facility.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Home Savings & Loan Association closes its Diboll branch and re-locates to its Angelina Mall branch. Home Savings & Loan's Diboll branch has been open for ten years.
Temple-Eastex announces its newest lumber converting facility will be located in De Quincy, Louisiana. The new $28.7 million mill will convert small to medium size timber from company and private timberlands in the area.
Angelina County Commissioners approve plan to have all county roads marked. Bright red and white road signs will be appearing shortly.
Woodrow and Opal Wood are honored by the Diboll Housing Authority and the City of Diboll for their work with the housing authority where they both worked for many years with Mr. Wood as executive director for twenty years.
The Texas Historical Commission honors Dr. Megan Biesele of Woodville for her work, "The Cornbread Whistle: Oral History of a Texas Timber Company Town" and the Diboll Historical Society at its annual preservation conference. Dr. Biesele's work won in the community history category.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Diboll High School welcomes new head basketball coach, Clifton Wilkins, who replaces John McGilvra who guided DHS basketball fortunes the past ten years.
Featured members of the 1978 cast of Hee- Haw, Hushpuppy Style, include Glenda Duke, Bette Lacey, Genie Flournoy, Gus Boesch, Acacia McMullen, Charles Brannen and Mary Stringer. The show is presented at the Lufkin Civic Center.
Winners in the spelling bee at Diboll Elementary School second grade include Deborah Hannah, Elizabeth Ingram, Melinda Linton, Tessie Austin, Delonda Rhone, Dianne Smith, Clay Eldridge, Danielle Farley, Kelly Klimpt, Deanna Gilbert, Rachel Porter and Shawn Lyles.
Diboll Lumber Division receives "Outstanding Safety Performance Award" from the Southern Forest Products Association. The lumber division operated 584,640 hours with the best safety record of all mills in the southern region of SFPA.
Ray Lenderman of Diboll is the first participant to win a Sims skateboard valued at $95 in the Free Press summer subscription campaign. Skateboards and bicycles are the prizes for those selling 30 one-year subscriptions.
