Fred Mitchell outpolled Gary Mike Smith in the Saturday, June 21, runoff nonelection for a place on the Diboll City Council. The runoff became a nonevent after Smith withdrew from the race Monday, June 16. Graveside services for John Edward McLain, 56, of Lufkin, were held June 24, 2008, in the Chinquapin Cemetery in San Augustine, with Reverend Ted Tedford officiating.
