Still riding high off of their victory in the Diboll 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament last weekend the Lumberjack squad would take their winning ways to uncharted waters. The Lufkin 7-on-7 SQT featuring some of the best talent from the Class 4A and 5A ranks in the Southeast Texas region and the Class 3A Diboll unit.

The Lumberjacks came out primed and ready to play the larger schools in the tournament, and they certainly showed no signs of awe when it came to what they saw.

The opening round of play for the Jacks was against the Lumberton Raiders. Lumberton is a Class 4A squad and had some real talent on the field. In fact the Raiders are coming off of their most successful season in football history and their first district title ever.

For the Jacks, well it was just business as usual and they kept up the same swagger that they were exhibiting in their win over Carthage only a week earlier.

Diboll just hit the ground running, with the exception of a Lumberton early second half burst of life, the Lumberjacks totally controlled the contest. In the end the Jacks were the victor and took the game by a final of 39-26.

The second contest of the day would pit Diboll against the 5A Kingwood Mustangs in pool play.

This time around the Jacks kept up the winning and they did it in high flying fashion.

The Diboll boys just completely outpaced the Mustangs squad and the result was very representative of the Jacks over powering play. The final score of the contest saw the Jacks taking it home 40-21.

The unfortunate twist in the weekends SQT came at the point between their big win over Kingwood and the final pool play game against Klein Collins. The Jacks were informed that as a small school and as how they had already qualified for the Division II Texas State Championship 7- on-7 event, that they were not eligible to compete past pool play.

Well that seemed to bring down the tone of the Jacks and they certainly lost some of that energy.

Diboll's Jacolby Spencer has become a warrior leading the Jacks during 7-on-7 play this Summer. Hopefully he will continue in the Fall of Friday Night's. According to Diboll Coach Bruce Bolden the Jacks got a little down after they were informed of the situation.

"I talked to them about that," Bolden said in reference to keeping their heads up no matter the situation.

No matter the reason it was a bit of a letdown when the Jacks faced off against their final opponent of the day, Klein Collins High School.

The opening half was a good one and with the exception of a terrible call that resulted in a Klein Collins score, the playing field was quite even.

The second half was not as friendly to the Jacks and the KC 7-on-7 team had things figured out, especially on the deep post route. KC just eventually was too much for the hometown boys.

The final score saw the Jacks fall by a final of 44-21.

Regardless the Jacks showed they can play with bigger schools and they should have gotten a great experience from the better competition.

The Jacks 7-on-7 squad heads for the state tournament and the Division II field of 32 teams July 10-11, in College Station, TX.
