      American Legion Auxiliary Unit 113 held its installation of officers for the 2008-2009 year Thursday, July 24. Sharon Phelps, 7th District president from Madisonville was the installing officer.

Diboll ex honored for work
      Diboll High School 2000 graduate Travis Lacox was among six Brazos Valleyarea police officers were honored for their efforts in the fight against drugs. "I have had the pleasure of supervising Officer Lacox since he was released from field training in October of 2006. While he was still in training, I heard great things about his dedication and desire to learn.

Troop 128 Golf Tournament
      Boy Scout Troop 128 is proud to host their 1st Annual Golf Tournament on August 16th at Neches Pines Golf Course in Diboll. Check in starts at 7:00 AM with a shotgun start at 8:00 AM. Tournament format is 4-man scramble, but single players may register and be placed on a team.

Temple Reunion set for weekend
      The 20th H.G. Temple All School Reunion will be held in Diboll Friday-Sunday, Aug. 8-10. All former teachers and students are invited. The reunion will begin Friday with registration at 4 p.m. at the community center of Diboll housing complex with a "chat and chew" social hour at 7 p.m.

     Chaunta Jolly of the T.L.L. Temple Library hands out awards certificates and other goodies to the children who completed this year's Summer Reading Program. The six-week program saw 113 youngsters sign up; 70 read the minimum 10 books to win their awards.

      Violet (Smith) Waltmon of Diboll celebrated her 90th birthday on July 24th. Her son Larry Waltmon and wife Betty of Marque and her daughter Brenda Martin and husband Jimmy of Diboll gave a party in her honor. Her four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren were there to help her celebrate.

      Sarah Harris was home from Virginia where she is living. She had a great time away from the two jobs she holds down but she seems to enjoy her work. Her mom MeLinda along with sister, Megan Harris and her cousin Taylor Carroll met her at the airport in Houston and they stopped to eat lunch in Diboll on the way back.

News from the Round Table at Pouland's
      Sunday afternoon brought back memories of Hurricane Rita after the high winds, rain and no electricity. Thankfully, I've not heard of any personal injuries except trying to sleep without the luxury of air conditioning and the hum of the ceiling fans. With all the trees down, I want to thank the crews who got the electrical current flowing in less than 10 hours.

All Around Lufkin
      Claire Cumbie, daughter of Jennifer and Jim Cumbie and granddaughter of Nancy Cumbie, made the 69th line of the Kilgore College Rangerettes. There were 82 that tried out for 30 spots. Tryouts were closed all week long. They announced the results to parents and friends on Saturday, July 26. There will be a Show Off on Aug. 22 at the Dotson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

      I'm a reader, and lately I've had to turn to my books, as my computer at home is showing signs of ill-health or old age and generally is not working right. So my on-line reading is pretty much on hold. But most of my books are in boxes, awaiting the long-delayed arrival of some book cases some friends say they have put together for me.

Editorial
      Dodging a bullet from a tropical storm on the Upper Texas Coast isn't the worst thing that can happen to a town. Diboll and Angelina County seem to have escaped Tropical Storm Edouard with nothing worse than some showers and a brief break from the heat. The previous Sunday evening's storm, unrelated to the named one, was much worse hereabouts.

Capital Highlights
      AUSTIN - President Bush on July 24 granted Gov. Rick Perry's July 23 request for a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration as Hurricane Dolly walloped South Texas. The declaration helps pay for emergency expenditures that occurred before, during and after the hurricane. But, Gov. Perry said, the declaration does not cover hurricane related individual or business losses.

      The Junior League of Lufkin recently held its end of the year celebration at the Diboll Civic Center where the active and sustainer members were honored with dinner and a skit and President, Mary Moore, presented several awards.

The subject of the essay is Sterling Burnett, a former Diboll resident and graduate of Diboll High School. Throughout my life I have had many people influence me, but my grandfather's influence has been greater than anyone.

      Federal Judge Jorge A. Solis extended July 28 the "standstill agreement" whereby the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed not to acquire land for the Neches River Refuge while the refuge was in litigation.

Sam Rayburn Fishing Report
      Sam Rayburn is at 160.86 and continuing to drop this week. The water temperature has been around 89 degrees. The water is clear to around 2 ft. and clearer in some spots. The water is still dropping as always at this time of the year. You can look for more of the shallow flats to become a little harder to get around and we will see more stumps and ridges.

A nip on both ends hurts
      I volunteered for the U.S. Coast Guard while a senior in high school. Me and two buddies actually offered to enlist in the Army, Navy, and Marines at the same time but all branches said they did not take high schoolers but would be happy to take us after graduation. We told the recruiters that we would go with the first branch that called us.
