Blood Drive this week
      First Bank and Trust, 104 N. Temple, will conduct a blood drive from 8-11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. By donating blood, donors help save up to three lives in your community, maybe even the life of someone you know. Individuals who Commit for Life and donate at least once a quarter can help ensure blood is on the shelf when they or a loved one is in need.

      If you haven't been hearing all the whoopla about Diboll Day, then we are here to tell you that it is coming Oct. 4. Everyone around town is gearing up for the big event with raffles, bingos, and cook shacks. Everyone can be a part of these Diboll Day activities. Just look for signs around town and participate where you can.

It Pays to Be a Lumberjack
     The Diboll JackBackers sponsor "RED FRIDAY" at Temple Elementary each week during the 2008 Lumberjack football season. All students who wear red shirts on Friday have their names entered into a drawing. One student from each grade level will win $5.00 each Friday during football season. This week's winners were: Aaron Cordero (5th grade), Vanessa Terrazas (4th grade), Noah Goins (3rd Grade), and Jose Acevedo (2nd Grade). Pictured with the winners is Nikki Miller (Asst. Principal). Sheila's Potpourri
      Teresa Moore of Fort Worth, Melissa, Karaleena and Kirstyn Franks and Sam Webb of Bossier City and Bobby Joe Evans were guests of Joyce and Dick Webb during the Labor Day holidays. We moms take advantage whenever possible and let the guys do the cooking. Sam cooked the meat while Joyce fixed the vegetables for a delicious meal.

News From The Round Table At Pouland's
      Hats off to the American Red Cross and to the people who work and volunteer for this organization. Good reports came from all over the county about the many shelters that housed the evacuees from Hurricane Gustav. One of the shelters was Faith Family Church on Highway 59 in Burke. Members Floyd and Christy Wall were their designated Disaster Relief Co-ordinators.

      Angel of Joy Lutheran Church, located at College Drive and Daniel McCall, across from Angelina College, is having a Fall Festival from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15. There will be a food booth where you can get a snack and a bake booth where you can find some goodies to take home.

Oreos used to just be Oreos
      Remember when an Oreo was an Oreo? Two chocolate cookies with a créme filling between them. That was an Oreo. How long has that been? Today, an Oreo is just about anything - vanilla, mint-flavored, fudge-covered. There must be dozens of varieties. A while back, I noticed in the grocery store a package of the vanilla Oreos.

      Diboll and Lufkin dodged what could have been a real bullet last week when Hurricane Gustav decided to visit Louisiana instead of the Texas coast. Further good fortune came when the storm pretty much fell apart upon making landfall, quickly becoming no more than a very wet storm system.

      AUSTIN -- The Texas Transportation Commission met and voted Aug. 29 in response to an Aug. 21 letter signed by Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Tom Craddick urging the commission to get rolling on the issuance of highway construction bonds.

      As the sun rose over the southeastern corner of Texas on the morning of Sep. 8, 1863, four Yankee warships began the bombardment of the pitiful excuse for a fort at Sabine Pass. Union strategists resolved in the summer of 1863 to compensate for the embarrassing New Year's Day loss of Galveston with a surprise attack of their own.

SHECO approves $2.5 million to members
      LIVINGSTON -- The Sam Houston Electric Cooperative board of directors recently approved the return of $2.5 million to co-op member-owners. Returned as capital credits, these refunds will be issued as a credit on members' September electric bill.

      The Anthony Smith Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met for their regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 2. Mayor Jack Gorden proclaimed Sept. 17-23 Constitution Week in the city of Lufkin. Guest speaker Carol Moore presented a slide show on the "Courthouses of Texas.

DAR members meet for regular meeting
      The Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will meet on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Golden Corral in Lufkin. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. but most members and guests arrive shortly after 6 for a Dutch treat dinner prior to the meeting.

Search for new poet laureate
      The Texas Commission on the Arts is seeking nominations for the positions of 2009 and 2010 state poet laureate, state musician, state two-dimensional artist and state three-dimensional artist. Any Texas citizen may make up to three nominations per artist category; however, self-nominations will not be accepted.
