Ashley Wilson, Diboll Day queen, left, and Sharon Brown, Group 1 chairman, bask in the glow of Wilson's triumph at this year's Diboll Day after Group 1 raised $118,619.64 to lead the way toward the 2008 fundraising total of $302,300.94, an excellent performance given the state of the economy and Hurricane Ike's rude interruption just three weeks ahead of the festival. In the friendly competition, Group 2 led by queen candidate Ashley Hines, raised $83,478 and Group 3 and candidate Chelsea Havard raised $100,203.20. Diboll City Council met in special session Tuesday, Sept. 30, to discuss behind closed doors the situation of indicted City Councilman Gary Jones, but took no action and made no comments after the executive session. Jones was indicted two weeks ago, along with former city street superintendent Lane Bass, for misuse of official information. More...

Diboll school district trustees heard a report on the English-language progress of Hispanic students at a generally routine meeting Tuesday, Sept. 30. Shanna Powers, language coordinator, said the district is using the Texas English Language Profi- ciency Assessment System, mercifully known as TELPAS, to evaluate the progress of limited English proficiency students. The Diboll Lumberjacks met up for the first time ever last Friday night against the Nacogdoches Dragons and the result saw the hometown boys out last, out man and out play the opposition in a 30-14 final.
