The temporary library at 800 North Temple Drive is closing its doors Nov. 15. Packing will begin this week for the move to the newly renovated library at 300 Park St. You will need to watch your step when you visit the library this week as there will be boxes and movers in the aisles. Pre-K News Pre-K has been learning all about shapes, sorting, counting, opposites, rhyming and letters. The students are learning all about school routines and rules, and doing a fabulous job! Dear Friends of Diboll ISD, I discussed doing a school news column with the Free Press staff and they agreed it would be a great way to keep the community updated on local issues that affect our school district. At Diboll Primary Library the goal is to encourage a life-long love for books and reading. Students have weekly opportunities to visit the library, learn to look at books in a "caring" way, and listen to stories read aloud so that they can practice their listening skills. More ... In celebration of Red Ribbon Week, Diboll Jr. High participated in a can food drive. The theme was "Don't Be a Turkey-Be Drug Free". More ... Diboll Primary's winner of the "Can It" food drive was Mrs. Bass' first grade class. The food drive was part of the Kick Off to Red Ribbon Week. The food donated will be sent to the families in Sabine Pass and High Island that were devastated by Hurricane Ike. The students at Primary raised approximately 6,000 pounds of food with Mrs. Bass' Class bring in about 1,200 pounds alone. The winners will receive a Blow Pop party. Way to go Diboll Primary! More ... Staff Sgt. Jason Wayne Walker, a native of Huntington, received the Purple Heart medal after being wounded by a mortar blast while stationed in Iraq. Walker, 30, also received a Combat Action Badge. The son of Gerald Wayne and Teresa Walker of Huntington is a 1996 graduate of Huntington High School and joined the Army in 1999. He is married to the former Jennifer Moreno and they have two children, Jace and Karlyn Walker. Mrs Walker is the daughter of: Pedro Moreno Jr and Terry Moreno of Corpus Christi and formerly of Diboll, and and Lynn and Bill Hardin of Diboll. He deployed from Fort Carson, Colo., and is now stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He also has been stationed at Hohenfels, Germany, and Fort Polk,La Walker was injured April 7. While on guard tower security, his tower was struck by a mortar round. His primary job is a light wheeled mechanic. More ... Veterans Day Celebration honoring all of the men and women that have given the sacrifice of protecting th freedom of every American was held yesterday at Temple Elementary School.
